Hello,

Mary SHEARER married James MALCOLM 8 Apr 1815 Largs, Ayr

Margaret SHEARER married John MALCOLM 29 May 1819 Largs, Ayr

John and James are brothers and I've been trying to prove Margaret and Mary were sisters.

Margaret died before 1841 and this is a possible birth/baptism:

name: Margeart Shearer
gender: Female
baptism/christening date: 14 Jan 1787
baptism/christening place: , LARGS, AYR, SCOTLAND
birth date: 02 Jan 1787
birthplace:
death date:
name note:
race:
father's name: William Shearer
father's birthplace:
father's age:
mother's name: Margeart Wark
mother's birthplace:
mother's age:
indexing project (batch) number: C11602-2
system origin: Scotland-VR
source film number: 1041392
reference number: 2:16G0KZS

Mary died in 1863 aged 69 and I now have a copy of her death certificate. Parents are listed as William SHEARER (...? builder) and Margaret SPEIRS.

So it seems we have 2x William in Largs. One marriage found so far:

groom's name: William Shearer
groom's birth date:
groom's birthplace:
groom's age:
bride's name: Margaret Wark
bride's birth date:
bride's birthplace:
bride's age:
marriage date: 02 Nov 1776
marriage place: Largs,Ayr,Scotland
groom's father's name:
groom's mother's name:
bride's father's name:
bride's mother's name:
groom's race:
groom's marital status:
groom's previous wife's name:
bride's race:
bride's marital status:
bride's previous husband's name:
indexing project (batch) number: M11602-2
system origin: Scotland-ODM
source film number: 1041392, 0102846
reference number:

Searching Scotland 1 Jan 1770 - 31 Dec 1799 for a marriage between:

William/Wm SHEARER/SHEARAR and SPEIRS/SPEARS = zero hits

Regards,

Dave

Who was the informant at the death, Dave, is it not more likely they got it wrong? But still to prove it.....
Did she die in Scotland and if so is she in Largs in the census?

regards
Barbara

They are unlikely to be sisters, Dave

William Shearer, Margaret Speir

name: Robert Shearer
gender: Male
baptism/christening place: , LARGS, AYR, SCOTLAND
birth date: 01 Jun 1788
birthplace: , Largs, Ayr, Scotland
father's name: William Shearer
mother's name: Margaret Speir
indexing project (batch) number: C11602-2

This couple were having children at the same time as William and Margaret Warke so must have been two Williams, no way can it be a remarriage as the couples had children the same year.

Hello Barbara,

Yes, that's Mary with son and his family. But spouse James is with daughter Mary N. in 1851:

1851
Piece: SCT1851/602 Place: Largs -Ayrshire Enumeration District: 8
Civil Parish: Largs Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: Largs
Folio: 0 Page: 8 Schedule: 37
Address: Muirs Land
Surname First name(s) Rel Status *** Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
MALCOLM James Head M M 62 Musisian & Weaver Ayrshire - Largs
MALCOLM Mary N Dau U F 21 Servant Ayrshire - Largs
Ok, thanks. So Speir(s) is correct. I had better check using SPEIR.

Regards,

Dave

It was a tandori chicken stirfry with tomato paste and yoghurt and brown rice.

That was the only reference to James being a musician. In 1841 he is a 'twister' and he died in 1856 so nothing in later years.

I used all my 60 credits today by getting 10 death certificates.

We'll get to what was on his death certificate later.

Jean 1784 seems to be the eldest of William & Margaret SPEIR, but Mary not listed on FS with the other three.

There is a David in 1777 and a Jeanet in 1782 (Largs) where only the father William is mentioned, the mother had nothing to do with those births.:D

Sounds a nice meal!

Thanks. I shall extend my search before 1770. Can only find the 1776 WARK one.

I do a different stirfry every Saturday. It was a bit too chili hot.

Some can't be found but it's still better than searching in Ireland.

Thanks for solving one bit - they are not sisters.

I've moved on to filling in some bits I can't read on Mary's death certificate.
