My ancestor was Sir Stephen Borde born 1563 in Sussex. He went to Eton in 1582 and was admitted to the Inner Temple in 1585. He was knighted in 1603. he died in 1630 and had land in Sussex and as far away as Somerset. If he was admitted to the Inner Temple, he must have been a barrister. The Inner Temple register says he was of Cuckfield but also lived at Clifford's Inn.

I descend from his 2nd wife Mary Cartwright born about 1580, and they married in 1605 at st Dunstan In The West, near the Inner Temple and Clifford Court. Mary died in 1667. His first wife was Mary Montague, daughter of citizen and skinner Roger Montague. I am still trying to find out any info on Mary Cartwright's origins. Any visitation says "daughter of ......Cartwright" so not very helpful. I did find a John Cartwright, gent, listed as a defendant in a 1614 dispute alongside Mary Borde and Stephen Borde.

BREAKTHROUGH.

Seems I found Mary Cartwright's parentage. Her son Thomas Borde left a will in 1650 and mentions an "Aunt Atkinson". In 1619 a Sarah Cartwright wed John Atkinson in Friday Street London. I did consider this. I then came across a John Cartwright of Lincoln's Inn, son of Peter Cartwright of Kings Lynn Norfolk. In 1609 a John Cartwright, gent, was mentioned when Sir Stephen Bord and his wife were defendants in Star Chamber court case.

I then looked through all Cartwright wills 1590-1660 in the PCC indexes. I found a Peter Cartwright will in 1597, he mentions children Mary, Sarah, John, Samuel and Peter, and wife Margaret. A Mary Cartwright was baptised in 1586 in London, daughter of Peter. Peter also mentions the Oxborrow family of King's Lynn. In 1624 Margaret Oxborrow left a will. She mentions her Cartwright grandchildren and sons Peter and Samuel, and mentions son in law Sir Stephen Board and her grandchildren Sarah, Jane, Thomas and John Board, and daughter Atkinson.

I had my eye on this Peter Cartwright for some time. Seems he is my ancestor and was a Mayor of Kings Lynn.
