My ancestor was Sir Stephen Borde born 1563 in Sussex. He went to Eton in 1582 and was admitted to the Inner Temple in 1585. He was knighted in 1603. he died in 1630 and had land in Sussex and as far away as Somerset. If he was admitted to the Inner Temple, he must have been a barrister. The Inner Temple register says he was of Cuckfield but also lived at Clifford's Inn.
I descend from his 2nd wife Mary Cartwright born about 1580, and they married in 1605 at st Dunstan In The West, near the Inner Temple and Clifford Court. Mary died in 1667. His first wife was Mary Montague, daughter of citizen and skinner Roger Montague. I am still trying to find out any info on Mary Cartwright's origins. Any visitation says "daughter of ......Cartwright" so not very helpful. I did find a John Cartwright, gent, listed as a defendant in a 1614 dispute alongside Mary Borde and Stephen Borde.
