I am looking for information about the sister of a General Snow who became matron of a training school for women land workers in 1916. There is a reference to her in Edith Olivier’s biography to “a very entertaining old Miss Snow as matron of our little hostel. She was the sister of a General and looked like one herself”. If the general referred to here is Sir Thomas d’Oyly Snow (born 1858) there are four candidates - Harriet Maynard Snow, Maria Isabella Snow, Eliza D’Oyly Snow, and Catherine Snow. The sister I am looking for would have been living in Wiltshire in 1916 and would be unmarried at this date.

I can't find which sister it was but I have dicovered that Maria Isabella died 1879 and Eliza D'Oyly died 1875. Therefore she must be either Harriet Maynard who died, unmarried, in 1934 or Catherine, who also died unmarried in 1938.

Harriet, Catherine and brother Maurice were living at Bridge Mansions, Hammersmith in the 1911 Census and all three are still there on the Electoral Roll for 1920.

There is a write up on Catherine's death but it does not say anything that helps as in regards who the Matron was.

West London Observer -
Friday 14 October 1938
WOMAN KILLED BY VAN

Miss Catherine Snow, aged 75, of Christchurch Road, East Sheen, who on Thursday was knocked down by a light goods van in Upper Richmond Road, East Sheen, near Milton Road, died on Friday at Putney Hospital, where she had been conveyed, suffering from a fractured left femur and a badly lacerated scalp.
A inquest is to held at the Battersea Coroner's Court on Tuesday, at 10.45am.
Miss Snow was the daughter of the late Rev G D Snow and sister of the Lieut. General Sir D O Snow.

Thank you to everyone who has responded to my thread. I will see at the County Archive if I can find anything for Harriet and Catherine. It is possible that one of them was in Wilts in 1916 as those who were supporters of ‘Women on the Land’ were often willing to relocate to where they were needed. It is of course possible that I have got the wrong General Snow but have found no other as yet!

Not sure if this fits or even if its the right Catherine or not. Just thought I would throw it out there.
