Hello!

My family name is Sirugo. I live in Sweden.
The name is Italian (my father) - but it originates from England way back in the 14th century when a noble man went to Siciliy on vacation, met a woman and never went back.

His name was Sir Hugo. He dropped the H and put the remaining parts together.
Now the fact that he was noble opens some doors, I believe.
I'm hoping that there are resources in the UK that makes it possible to trace exactly which Sir Hugo I'm looking for. And it might even be possible to trace roots even further with that knowledge.

But being a Swede I don't have any idea at all of where to start searching for those noble roots.
Is there any sources to be found where their destinies are documented?

Hi Sirugo,

Welcome to the addictive world of genealogy and welcome to the forum.

What a great mix of nationalities you have there! :)

I have not come across the Sir Hugo name - only as a christian name, for example Sir Hugo Blaithwaite.

Can you come up with any dates and any relevant information on how this person changed his name to Sirugo?

All the best,
Dave

Ah, so you mean that there should have been a third "part" of the name that we don't know of?
We don't know more than what I wrote. So if we get our hands on that third part we might be able to take things further? Actually my father is currently digging into these facts with his Italian contacts. Thanks so far. We'll be back. ::)

Another question

Approximately how many "sirs" were there in GB around the 14th century?
Are we talking hundreds, thousands or a hundredthousands of them?
