Hi

My grandmother worked as a live-in domestic servant and it at this stage appears that she may have had 3 children, one been my father, to her employer. Has anyone else come across a situation like this before? Maybe we have got it all wrong, but there are so many coincidences that led us to believe that this is what happened.

Hi Gibbo

Many years ago my late father whilst married to his first wife had a live in lodger, It has now emerged that over the twenty years she was living with them she and my father were having an affair and she had seven children by him, all but two were adopted, one has sadly taken his own life:( but over the next two weeks I am planning to meet two of the girls and then they and a brother are planning to visit us here.

Skeletons in the closet , yes, but nice ones  :2fun:

Gwen :)

Hi Gibbo,
Thats the thing with family history. Sometimes we find out some of the unfortuneate details of rellies.
Some we can ignore and others we can't.
The worst I have come across in my tree so far, are children born out of wedlock and the parents then go on to marry.
I have yet to find anything other than that.
As for your Grandmother, she could have been 'in love' only to be duped by her employer. Or the relationship could have been genuine and his parents could have put a stop to it.
There are quite a few scenarios to consider. But like most, we will never know the absolute truth, unless we are lucky.

Hi Gibbo

Yes I have had this. As many of you have probably read, my great, great grandmother was born to a single mother and the fathers wife had just died after a long illness just weeks before the birth. I think they knew each other and she was there for him when his wife was dying and that lead to pregnancy. They then married when the baby was a few months old.

I think there are many servants that have had their masters child due to exploitation or just a mad fling, but several children implies a long term relationship which must have been obvious to those in the local community as you can't exactly cover up the pregancies and no other obvious father outside her place of work.

In my story the father of the baby was a male servant and footman. I think that is how they met as her village was surrounded by country estates.
