slate getter

I have found that a 5 x great grandfather was a slate getter
He lived in Rosthwaite Cumberland ,so presumably worked in the slate mines in Honister, Borrowdale.he later moved to Seathwaite Lancashire where there were slate mines in the area and was also descibed there as a slate getter

Can anybody tell me please what a slate getter's job in the mine was?
