Hi Dave,

The only Martha Snelling that comes up on the 1851 Welsh census age 1 born Neath, is with a Suzannah Snelling age 25 lodger married born in Kent (cant make out place name) and also a John Snelling age 3 in the civil parish of Neath. There is a Joseph Snelling lodger married born abt 1818 Ireland occ carpenter living in the civil parish of Cadoxton Juxta Neath

Hello juliejtp,

Thanks you for looking.

I have a son, Robert BRYANT of Sophia SNELLING (parents William & Elizabeth) born 1833 Surrey married to a Martha SNELLING born 1849 Neath (parents Joseph & ?).

Now we have a Suzannah married to a SNELLING.

Robert & Martha named their first child Richard Hosegood so somewhere in the tree there is probably a HOSEGOOD. I wonder if it could be Martha's mother's name? Hmmmm.

Regards,

Dave

Hello Joyce,

Yes, I have it but it will be some time yet before I can decide on priorities and actually order the few I can afford.

Meanwhile, I'm trying to sort out the BRYANT, SNELLING, HOSEGOOD connection. This is the only one I have found so far and it's the 'opposite' of what I was expecting to find:

Marriages Dec 1840 Devon
SNELLING Martha Honiton 10 181
HOSEGOOD William Honiton 10 181

31 Dec 1840 Salcombe Regis, Devon Batch: M051591

Dave

Hello juliejtp,

I am in contact with a descendant of Robert BRYANT. He lives in Queensland but has had virus problems with his computer and lost a lot of stuff so I've had no answers to my questions re the BRYANT - SNELLING connection for the past six months.

I can't sort out the Glamorgan - Surrey connection. This might help:

Please see if you can find this SNELLING family in Surrey in 1841. Thanks.

William b. ?
Elizabeth b. ?
Sophia b. 1833

c. 24 Nov 1833 Horne, Surrey William & Elizabeth Batch: C025105

Hello juliejtp,

Thank you. It looks like the one with the Caterham, RD Godstone connection:

Deaths Mar 1892
Bryant Sophia 59 Godstone 2a 202

Deaths Sep 1899
Bryant Thomas 79 Godstone 2a 137

I'm not sure we can go much further with this one.

Regards,

Dave

Hello juliejtp,

Thank you very much. Yes, that solves where Sophia was in 1841.

The relationships are to the head of the household or to the household member searched for? So if Sophia was the one searched for then James is the brother of Richard's spouse Sophia?

The 1871 census says Thomas BRYANT was born in Coulsdon also.

Richard CULLINGHAM Spouse: SOPHIA SNELLING
Marriage: 25 DEC 1827 Coulsdon, Surrey, England
Batch: M013461

Well now  brother and sister born 20 years apart - is that what we have? Emma's father is James?

I can't find a marriage for James in IGI that fits.

I wonder how much I'm missing that the BRYANT descendant knows? Oh well, we may already know more than he dooes.

Hello juliejtp,

Thank you very much. I still can't find the connection between Martha and Sophia SNELLING.

Anyway, son Richard H died in Queensland in 1903. That is the earliest date I have found so far for any of the family in Australia. I can't find them on the shipping records yet so please see if you can find them in 1901. Thanks.

Regards,

Dave

Hello juliejtp,

Thanks for looking. I'm lucky, I can find all the births in FreeBMD. It's Richard Hosegood, Robert Joseph, Alice Dorothea, Clara Victoria and John McDonald.

Dave
