Hello everyone and Happy New Year!

Can anyone help?
Im trying to find the birth record of my GGGGGrandmother Jane Snodgrass. According to her death record she was born 1808 DUMF Father Robert Snodgrass mother Sarah Snodgrass, bu I cant find any records of her?
Also I belive that she was married sometime before 1840 in Scotland before she emigrated but cant find records of this.
Can anyone help me?

Hi Hannah,

I had a look on Scotlandspeople couldnt find anything for a Jane with parents Robert and Sarah, but I think Jane and Jean are interchangeable. I have a 4x gt grandmother Jane but on her other childrens births she is down as Jean.
Perhaps one of our Scottish members could clarify that.

At the moment Ancestry is playing up, will try later on just in case Robert and Sarah are there on the census. Does DUMF mean Dumfriesshire?

Hi Julie,
I think that DUMF is short for Dumfriesshire. Its an old Australian record that has given me this info, so cant be sure!

I also thought the same re Jane and Jean. Thanks for checking and any further clarification would be gratefully received!

Found this Robert Snodgrass, as I can only view the transcription not the census image and cannot tell if Robert is a widow or not. You will have to excuse the errors.

1861 Civil Parish Wiston and Roberton, county Lanarkshire
Address Westmilling

Robert Snodgrass age 75 boarder born Sanquhar Dumfries occ fonnerly cowherd

1851 civil parish Wiston and Roberton
Address Westmilrig

Robert Snodgrass age 65 born Sanquhar Dumfries occ cowherd

(Not sure whether the same person)
1841 civil parish Wiston and Roberton
Address Stable
Robt Snodgrass age 50 occ ag. lab born Lanarkshire

Couldnt find a Sarah to match.

Hi Hannah,
Found a Jean Snodgrass in the 1841 census, on Scotlandspeople.

1841, Snodgrass Jean ,25, Minnigaff, Kirkcudbright.
Kirkcudbright is the next county to Dumfries, don't know if it is a connection or not, will have another look over the weekend.

I've been on the familysearch.org website, in the IGI Individual records and, theres a lot with the surname Snodgrass from around the area your looking at.

The Robert Snodgrass you give information of sounds good, dates etc fit, will keep this information for when I clarify Jane's information and see if it fits.

Hi Iain,
I think Jane was born c1908, so think this one is a little young. For such an unusual name, im so surprised at the number of Jeans/Janes there are!
I'll try and get her death or marriage record for more info.
