I have the baptism record for John but can't find one for Charles.

I'd like a look up for Charles in 1861 and 1871 and for John in 1871 please.

They are both in Queensland by 1878:

Brisbane Directory 1878-79
Snow, John T. (Snow Bros.), jeweller, P. ter
Snow, Chas. W. (Snow Bros.), jeweller, Leichhardt st, Spg H

Hi Dave,

Looks like these Snows went away before 71 and perhaps before 61 for Charles. I can't find either although I can't be sure about Charles not knowing where he is born or his age tho I presumed it was Norfolk.

Hello Barbara,

Thanks for looking.

All I have is that Directory reference to a brother Chas. W. I could not find a birth/baptism for Charles that seemed to fit.

Probable death in Qld. with no age:

1913/B18353 Snow Charles William

Regards,

Dave

I've found a funeral notice but no death notice. Still don't know his age.

He named his residence 'Leckhampton' I wonder if that means he was born in Gloucestershire?

Buried in South Brisbane Cemetery but no age recorded:

Snow Herbert John 25 / 12 / 1885 Unknown
Snow Charles W 18 / 10 / 1913 Unknown
Snow Beatrice M 07 / 11 / 1919 Unknown
Snow Lucy E 25 / 10 / 1902 Unknown

I can't find the marriage in Queensland. Don't know if one of those is his spouse or not yet.

No obvious ones but too many Snows to look at each individual one. You don't have a wife for John or anything or did he marry abroad?

Sorry Dave,
Getting confused, not hard!
So how was Charles in Lincolnshire when he was in Queensland?

And is that death a Queensland one?

Sorry about that. I was typing a reply and hit some key combination that brought up a small window. When I closed the window the computer went in to rapid shutdown mode.

Yes a death in Queensland. I found those buried in the same grave then found one was his spouse then found the marriage then realised as you have that dates don't seem to fit. All I can think of is that Charles returned to England to marry ?? or on business and married then returned to Australia. I was searching for Charles in 1881 census when the computer shut down.

This birth in Qld. confirms we have the right family:

20 Sep 1882/B29611 Charles Smethurst Snow - Charles William - Lucy Emily Garn

William SNOW & Elizabeth SMITHHURST
Marriage: 20 Mar 1837 Holy Trinity, Kingston Upon Hull, Yorkshire

Death of J T in Qld. just to confirm:

15 Dec 1919/C06400 Snow John Thomas - William Snow - Elizabeth Smethurst

Snow Bros, Est 1864, but that might be at the London address: 13 Thavies Inn, Holborn.

Hello Barbara,

Please see if you can find William & Elizabeth in 1841. I hope Charles is with them.

Possible given RD for marriage:

Births Dec 1838
SNOW Charles William Caistor 14 272

name: Charles Wm Snow
event: Census
event date: 1841
gender: Male
age: 2
birthplace: Lincolnshire
record type: Household
registration district: Caistor
sub-district: Great Grimsby
civil parish: Great Grimsby
county: Lincolnshire

May or may not be the right one as there is no sign of William.

No obvious record for Charles that fits in 1881 and no obvious baptism. So it would seem Charles and John didn't arrive in Australia together but so far neither found in shipping records. They are both in Qld. in 1878. Charles marries in Dec Q 1881 in England and child born in Qld. on 20 Sep 1882. He named his residence 'Leckhampton' but Gloucestershire seems to be no help.

Regards,

Dave

Hello Barbara,

Thanks. Do you think we have the right ones? 1851 has Bardsey for Elizabeth and there is a possible birth/baptism in Gisburn, Yorkshire but they are not nearby.

Elizabeth Smethurst
England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
christening: 17 Nov 1816 GISBURN,YORK,ENGLAND
residence: York, England
parents: John Smethurst, Sarah

William - probably if coast guard in 1841 too.

Looks as though we have done all we can and the rest can sit on the Migration board with lots of others.

Regards,

Dave

I looked for a birth reg to match the baptism in Norfolk for J T and didn't find one 1841-1844. Can't find one in Norfolk for Henry either. Surprise:

Death in Qld. 1892/B25230 Samuel Henry Snow - William Snow - Phoebe Elizabeth Smethurst

This is the right RD for Hunstanton:

Births Jun 1843
Snow Samuel Henry Docking 13 61

Guess so. :D

Thanks Barbara. That takes a few years off the range for his arrival in Australia. I wonder if Charles was going back and forth managing the shop they had in Holborn.

Samuel Henry is just Henry in the census so he is making it harder for us.

Looking for a Phoebe E. or Elizabeth Phoebe didn't help.

Thanks dave.

I know my way around area south of Huddersfield (not in person) from all my family connections there but I'll have to check where Barnsley is. :D Ok south of Wakefield.

One thing is obvious the name SMETHURST is in Lancs and some in Yorkshire.

I wonder:

Deaths Sep 1846
Snow Phoebe Elizabeth Docking 13 48

Deaths Mar 1854
Snow William Caistor 7a 385

Charles william Snow was the brother of John Thomas Snow, and the father of Charles Smethurst Snow who founded the Scouts in Australia. He was the grandfather of Anne Stone, nee Snow, who recieved the Order of Australia medal, and he was the grandfather of Malcolm Snow, a decorated urban planner. His brother John Thomas Snow also produced a number of interesting and influential Australians.
