Thank you for this I had not seen your posting on this subject before
I was amazed to see on the site the wonderful Sammy McCarthy
and I have just purchased the book `Traveller`s children in London`s fields
I will be exploring this site much more over the next few days-my mothers family lived in the Spitalfields area

What fantastic pictures ... just goes to show how much has been lost. Loved the picture of the muffin man ... always wondered how he carried the muffins.

Thank you Lee.

Jay. :)

Hey Leefer
A very BIG thank you for the old London follow up:D
My dad was placed in Banardos at Stepney in 1915 when he was 2 ,I have some wonderful yet sad photos of him selling the Banardo paper on the streets of London
through the aftercare dept of Banardos we have photos of when he arrived at the orphanage in his(new)sailor suit, and then a photo taken 6 days later in his begging suit he was given 17 copies to sell a day-if he didnt ,then it was bed no supper(according to meal rations -water broth and 3 day old bread) if this happened 3 times in a row then punishment was a good old` righteous thrashing` ,he had the back scars to prove it if it wasnt for the stealing of fruit of the docks and the Jews feeding him he always said he had no doubt that he would have straved,,later on my dad had offices in London city and so the streets of London were my playgrounds,I was adopted by the East enders,Jews and the polish ,what a wonderful and varied childhood I had in a wonderful city ==many of the photos are of streets that I knew has a child and that I walked with my dad

Fantastic Rose,i was brought up in care and it was fairly tough in the boys home i lived at...but not as tough as those days though for sure
Even though you remember those days when you walked the streets as tough there are many today who will look at the photos and wished they had walked with you.
Now and again they refresh an old page so heres is an old page for those who didn't see it:)
