Staffordshire districts

I sometimes find it difficult when searching records as my ancestors have very often used different birthplace names from census to census.
Is Walsall a part of Lichfield?
Is Bloxwich in Walsall or Lichfield?
Walsall Wood is that a village? Suburb?
I just find it very confusing at times and as I am not from that area I am not familiar with the placenames.
Can anyone suggest some tips?

Hi Kim,

Looks like Bloxwich comes under Wasall situated in Walsall Foreign Township.

If you go to the Genuki site you can look up the towns and parishes in Staffordshire. See link below.

In addition to Julie's recommendation to use Genuki which is an excellent resource I always have a good old fashion map book on my desk so that I can look up the place names and orientate myself in relation to nearby towns and villages. I have learnt a lot about UK geography this way

It is possible to photocopy a map book page and mark on a map where people moved from one village to the next. it gives an interesting extra dimension to the tree.

I also try to find a picture of the place concerned on the internet and copy it into my tree. Cannot publish them but useful for personal use

Hi

There is a very useful resource called the Index of Places in England and Wales which can be downloaded from Genuki. It is a searchable pdf document which tells you what county and registration district a place is in and also gives details of these changes over time. It is designed to be used with their Registration Districts in England and Wales (1837-1974) but is very useful on its own.

I too have always used a good old fashined map book which now contains well thumbed pages.
Thank you Indigo for telling us about the Index of Places for England and Wales. I have added it to my favourites and I'm sure it will prove very useful.
