I'm looking for info on Stephen JOHNSTON who married Hannah COLLISTER in 1844 in Cocermouth, Cumberland. I'm particularly interested in finding out more about the Johnston history - any info on Stephen, his parents/family etc. do you have any records or info you could provide me? I'm a descendant of their son, Peter, who migrated to Australia in 1884.

The censuses have Stephen born in the Workington/Dearham areas, this may be worth considering...

I have ancestors from Dearham and also have Johnson family elsewhere in Cumberland so was interested in this. Firstly remember that there are a lot of Johnsons in the area and the name is spelt Johnson/Johnston/Johnstone almost at random.

Peter Johnston was baptised 2 Oct 1853 at Dearham, s.o.Stephen & Hannah

The 1861 census gives Stephen as age 40, born Workington an "engine worker at coal mine" and mother Hannah age 43 born Whitehaven.

1871 gives Stephen as a pit engineman aged 50 and Hannah aged 50, same birthplaces as 1861.
As an engineman Stephen was not a miner hewing the coal but worked in the engine-house in charge of the winding engine for the lift.

You have already been given the bapt of Stephen in 1821 and the 1841 census for the family in Dearham. Stephen's parents John and Sarah were still in Dearham in 1851 with just their youngest son John. John (senior) was an engineman, age 52 born Eaglesfield Cumberland (this is about 3 miles from Cockermouth). Sarah was 55 born Workington. By 1861 Sarah is a widow so John Johnston died ~ 1850's

Stephen was the eldest child so John and Sarah possibly married at the church where Stephen was baptised, i.e. Workington Presbyterian but there are no marriages on-line for that church.
Assuming that the Mary Johnson age 77 who was with John & Sarah in 1841 was John's mother I looked for a suitable baptism and there was a John Johnston bapt 24 April 1798 at Brigham 2 miles from Eaglesfield s.o. Mary and John so that is possible but as I said the name is very common!
Sorry I can't do any more, will keep looking.

Can anyone locate Hannah's death?

I couldn't see her after 1891 at first but she is with son, Stephen in Workington - 1901 Ref: RG13; Piece: 4884; Folio: 86; Page: 55

Nothing leaping out for a death, this is the closest I can see so far [age 8-9y out]
