I have several certificates and documents that belonged to my late in-laws. I have photo-copied all of them and want to store away the originals ones as already they are starting to look a bit worse for wear. What is the best way to store these so they dont get any further damage to them? Would appriecate some advice please.

When storing papers and documents it is best to store them flat and unfolded in the dark.
If possible separate each sheet using PVA plastic such as Mylar or similar.
If you can encapsulate in Mylar so much the better but only encapsulate never laminate.

Remove any metal staples and paper clips prior to storage.
Use an acid free box to hold the papers rather than any plastic or metal box.
Store in room which will not fluctuate in temperature or humidity and is not subjected to extremes of temperature.

Ensure the papers are kept free from insects as many of these will eat the paper.

Never store acidic papers (newsprint etc) with acid free papers as the acid will leach and destroy both types in time.

Hello Guy

Many thanks for that. Some of the papers are already damaged so hopefully it is not to late to save them. i havent touched them in anyway so today i will lay them flat and do as you suggested. My in-laws have had them folded for many years and they are pretty bad where the creases are from been folded. staples, now i didnt give that a thought!
