Hello,

NSW Marriage 609/1861 POWELL STRAFFORD J - HAWTHORNE CHARLOTTE - SYDNEY

The Sydney Morning Herald - Wednesday 11 September 1861 p.1
MARRIAGES
On the 4th of March, at Elizabeth-street, by the Rev. Dr. Fullerton, by special license, Stradford James Powell, of the Glebe, to Miss Charlotte Hawthorn, of this city.

Children
2892/1861 POWELL ROBERT G - STRATFORD - CHARLOTTE - GLEBE
2827/1863 POWELL (MALE) - STRATFORD - CHARLOTTE - GLEBE
74/1865 POWELL STRATFORD J - STRATFORD J - CHARLOTTE - SYDNEY

I can find no trace of them after 1865. Did they leave Australia or die in NSW?

Variations include Stradford, Stratford, Strafford. Looks as though Stratford is the correct one.

Regards,

Dave

It appears that Thomas Eyre POWELL and his family come out from Ireland on the Susan in 1839. But then you probably already knew that  A son was born on the ship on the way over. I would asume that is how Sydney got his name :2fun::2fun:

No mention of Stradford in his father's death notice. Still looking tho i wouldnt be surprised if they left the country. An unusal name and he isnt showing up after 1865.

Thanks. Yes but I hope you have not taken that off a tree that is suspect.

The Ireland bit is true as is the POWELL birth on board. The name is unusual in England and Australia but not that unusual in Ireland and America. It turns up as place names and the middle name of lots of people.

Yes, apart from the early 1860s newspaper articles about Stratford being the driver of a horse-drawn bus I can find no further reference to him.

Well now. :D Thank you very much. I had not seen that notice. I was going by an email received from NSW State records that a male POWELL had been born on board 'Susan' and it was NOT the 'Susan' that had departed from Ireland but the one that had departed from England. Lots of confusion because two vessels by that name arrived a few days apart.

Vessel 'Susan' arrived 1 Feb 1839 from Londonderry no bv Powell
Vessel 'Susan' arrived 10 Mar 1839 from Plymouth 1 bv Powell (male)

I hope that checks out with Capt Nigby on the right vessel. :2fun:

While talking about Sydney here is another puzzle:

613/1859 POWELL SYDNEY - COTTER MARY ANN - SYDNEY
2910/1861 POWELL SYDNEY - WALKER MARY JANE - TAMWORTH

Did he marry or do we have 2 or even 3x Sydney POWELLs in NSW?

Looks like the master on the 'Susan' that arrived 10 March was Neathy = Nigby ???

Now that is curious - No POWELL family on the list.

They must have been passengers but not Bounty immigrants.

Thanks Gibbo. That is interesting. There is only one Thomas Eyre in Sydney so if that is not an error then is Stratford a son? If not how does Stratford fit in?

Eldest son:

Jas. Eyre - Witness to the 1853 marriage of Mary Elizabeth.
Eyre - Witness to the 1860 marriage of William Henry.

Death 283/1878 POWELL EYRE AGE 46 YEARS DIED SYDNEY - SYDNEY

Next one:

Death V18608485 122B/1860 POWELL ROBERT AGE 30 YEARS

No doubt about this one:

I don't even have a list of how many children did arrive in 1839.

I have nothing to rule Robert or Stratford in or out if Sydney was the 4th.

No doubt about eldest Eyre and William Henry and then Sydney.

Something else i noticed also is the marriage notice for Straford does not mention Thomas Eyre Powell where as all the other marriages and death notices for the family say the daughter or son etc of Thomas Eyre Powell.

Yes, but it does say he was from 'The Glebe' which is the right area of Sydney.

Dr Fullerton was a Presbyterian minister who ran a dubious marriage service. He didn't bother checking things such as if they were actually single or their age or ...

I know what film it should be on but I've not found that 1861 marriage yet. Probably won't list parents.
