It gives the distribution of surnames in 1881 and 1998,the former especially useful since population movement was less and surnames more localised.May give a clue where to look for relatives.
It shows the geographical spread but in addition gives other statistics such as top area and postal town for Great Britain and also information for some other countries such as Australia,New Zealand and USA.
