Many members mention areas where certain surnames appear to be concentrated.

A site I find especially interesting (apologies if you already know about it) is
www.nationaltrustnames.org.uk

It gives the distribution of surnames in 1881 and 1998,the former especially useful since population movement was less and surnames more localised.May give a clue where to look for relatives.

It shows the geographical spread but in addition gives other statistics such as top area and postal town for Great Britain and also information for some other countries such as Australia,New Zealand and USA.

Really interesting.Thank you.
I put in husbands ancestral surname on his mothers side (Sabourn) for the 1881 search and it was entirely to be found in Northumberland, which is where we are researching. Absolutely nowhere else in the country. Anyone else come across this. Any ideas on what it means, if anything?
