I'm interested in the surname IRONSIDE.
This is an important name in my family history research, and the IRONSIDE's I relate to are Aberdeenshire, and thus, Scottish.
However, I was reading something about the English Royal Family of 1066. As I understand it, Harold Godwinson became King of England, over the rightful heir, Edgar the Aethling who was only a child. Edgar the Aethling was the grandson of Edmund IRONSIDE & from the royal bloodline.
So, it is an English surname.
It seems an interesting project to try and trace IRONSIDES either forwards from Edmund or backwards from the IRONSIDES I've been researching.
When for instance did IRONSIDE move 'across the border'?
Maybe, just maybe, there's a bit of 'blue blood'?
I also wonder why 'Hollywood' chose that name for the Raymond Burr Detective series of some years ago - "A Man called Ironside" (hope I have the title right).
Anyone care to offer some thoughts/advice please?
James.
