It's getting very close to home for me with names like Mellor and Beaumont and places like Holmfirth. Soon there might be a connection to my tree. I'll have to check out Sarah MELLOR further.

Hi most of this has been sorted nicely for you. Holmfirth is particularly interesting because of several devastating floods in the Holme valley, by far thw worst was in 1852

The 1852 flood occurred when the embankment of the Bilberry reservoir collapsed, releasing 86 million gallons of water down the River Holme. It caused 81 deaths and a large amount of damage to property in the valley leaving many homeless and without work. The buildings and structures destroyed included four mills, ten dye houses, three drying stoves, 27 cottages, seven tradesmen’s houses, seven shops, seven bridges crossing the River Holme, ten warehouses, eight barns and stables.

The collapse occurred at about 1.00am on the 5 February 1852 following a period of heavy rain. The story of the flood made the front page of the London Standard newspaper.[2]

You will find many other references to it. My wife and I made a special stuy of the disaster a few years ago

Amongst the donations to the relief fund is one from a Charles Lockwood for £10 and 2/6d from a George Mellor of Kirkburton. Godfrey Mellor and Thomas Mellor both donated £20. I have a full list of all who died and neither family name is on the list Thought this would be of interest

Hello dochines,

Thanks for that bit of history. I have several families in my tree who lived in that area but don't have any specific ones I can say died as a result of the flood. There could be some Barraclough /Barrowclough children or related I've not entered in the tree.

I have a Lydia Beaumont born 1820 Almondbury but can't find if she is connected to Martha Jane.

I have a Wright Mellor born 1817 Huddersfield who was at various times a Merchant, Wollen Manufacturer, Alderman, Justice of the Peace, Magistrate and Deputy Lieutenant. I don't know yet if he has any connection to the Sarah Mellor mentioned.

Hi Dave,

I have looked at the casualty list again. There are no Mellors but there is

no 68; Ann Earnshaw Beaumont, 14 years, lived with her grandfather the said Joshua Earnshaw. who was victim 17, of Water St Hinchcliffe mill

If Earnshaws interest anyone, there were several others involved related to Enos Earnshaw who resided in America

This was a sad entry;
no 16. infant child unknown, supposed to be Hannah Bailey's
It was erroneously reported that this child was born in the water; but it bore evidence of having been alive for a few days and was dressed. It is said that Enos Bailey had some difficulty in identifying his wife owing to the changed features thriugh drowning, and that he only became assured of her identity by a particular mole upon her person

1928 Evelyn Maud Lockwood listed as a widow, so not sure if I have the correct one?
Oxford St Claudelands, Waikato, Hamilton.

1919 Otaki, Wellington has Evelyn married, there is a Thomas listed at a different address a butcher, no middle initial so possible not your man.

Oznannie

sorry folks missed page 2.
