Susanna Anne Betts, was bapised @ Lewknor Oxon, dau. of Thomas & Mary.

She married Edward Hyde, 11 June 1855 @ St Paul, Oxford.

Last child born was George Henry Hyde @ Tetsworth, 1867. (Birth and baptism found, no death nor burial or Census return).

By the 1871 census, Sussana/Susanah/Susan Hyde was in Milbank Prison in Westminister, London.

1881 census in Prison in "Female Convict Prison" Knaphill, Woking, Surrey.

In Oxford, 2 March1870, her conviction offence was Murder, and penalty was to be Hanged. But obviously she never was.

Any newspaper reports please, as to who and why she murdered that person. :)

Thanks.

Trove newspapers.

MURDER BY A MOTHER.
On Tuesday morning, Nov. 9, a shocking oc
currence took place in the village of Tetsworth,
near Tharne, in Oxfordshire. A woman named
Susannah Hyde, wife of a shoemaker, it was
discovered, had killed one of her children, a boy
about three years of age, by nearly severing his
head from his body with a razor, and had after-
wards endeavoured to destroy herself, first by
attempting to cut her own throat, and afterwards
by trying to strangle herself with some pieces of
twine. The woman had previously shut another
child, a girl older than the deceased, in the next
room, and this girl, through a crack in the door,
saw her brother murdered, and her mother
attempted suicide. The child afterwards, ma
naged to get out of the room, and opening the
front door ran to the house of a neighbour and
the unfortunate woman was found black
in the face, and almost dead from strangulation.
Late in the evening of the same day, Mr. H.
Dixon held an inquest on the body of the child,
when Edward Hyde, the father of the deceased,
said that he had bad words with his wife during
the night, and that he had left home early in
the morning. He had often heard his wife
threaten to kill the children. He had charged
her with going with another man, and he be-
lieved he had just grounds for such a charge.
In answer to a juryman, the witness admitted
that he had-deserted his wife at times, and
had not sent her any money for her support.
A verdict of " Wilful murder against Susannah
Hyde was returned."

George was buried 13 November 1869, Tetsworth, Oxfordshire, aged 3.

Tried looking for a burial for George Henry Hyde firstly, and a mistake on Anc. had him buried a year previous, and born a year earlier. So I'd dismissed that one.

Once I saw his Mum was in Prison, it just got me wondering. For the very first time of using Trove all these years, I actualy got a result.

Yep, so I answered this query myself, thanks to Trove.:)

If you're feeling redundant, I can't find her death with any accuracy.!

Last possible sighting was in 1891 Census, Residence Place - Stone, Kent, England. Sub reg.dist., Dartford, City of London Lunatic Asylum.

No p.o.b given, but birth year of 1830, aged 61.

It seems she was admitted to Tower Hamlets Workhouse in 1896. Widow of Edward Hyde, shoemaker.(Correct). But he dies in 1903, Union Workhouse in Thame, Oxon. He is buried in Towersey.

There is another admittance a few months earlier, Widow of Edward, a draper.?

Discharged from Leavesden 27th Feb 1900.

For the most part it all fits.
