Several variations in Sybella's name in the reg.

How the author of one tree gets the birth of daughter Emily Alice as 29 Sep 1855 I don't know. The marriage was in 1858.

Dave i found something of interest which i think could be worth following up.

The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954)
Tuesday 28 July 1857

SYBELLA CATHERINE BATHER, (maiden name Berkhead) is earnestly requested to write to her sister SUSAN, care of Mr. Groves, 91, Flinders-street East, Melbourne._

I wonder if Emily was to her marriage to Bather.

That is a good question. :2fun:

No BAITHER births or deaths in NSW.

The origin of the name is Germany, more specifically, Wurttemberg.

I can see no marriage in England.

I can see no birth in England for Emily with either family name.

One tree says born England but no other details re father or marriage.

Interesting. B= Birkhead:

Birth 35035/1889 CHANNON OSWALD B - JOHN - EMILY A - ADELONG

Death 10827/1969 CHANNON OSWALD BIRKHEAD - JOHN - EMILY ALICE - ST LEONARDS

What about a VIC look up for a marriage for Birkhead and Baither/Bather. And maybe a birth look up for Emily under the Baither name.

No sign in the index of the marriage or birth.

There is a Birkhead marriage 1851 - 1857 but not any variation of Sybella and not Susan or Fanny or Rosa or Clara or Emma or Matilda. So not a sister using middle name. Not brother Edward or William.

Victoria 1855 a marriage for a Sarah BIRKHEAD to a John...

Victoria 1858 Susan BIRKHEAD to a GROVES.

Yes, well that would be interesting. :2fun:

No sign of a birth or death in Victoria for BAITHER and no sign in E/R.

The name does exist with that spelling in Germany and USA.

I checked for wills in VIC for Bather/Baither but nothing to suit. Just thought it was worth checking incase Mr Baither died there

Maybe she was a widow when she arrived.

Her marriage in 1858 has her name as Birkhead.

I think we are stuck. Possibly no marriage and no birth reg for Emily.

But she still arrived somehow with or without Emily.

Age at death for Emily says born abt 1855. I wonder where the 29 Sep 1855 came from?

I found this the other day about Emily's father-in-law. A very long article.

The Sydney Morning Herald - Wednesday 4 May 1870 p.6
DEPLORABLE CASE OF SUICIDE.
CORONER'S INQUEST.
The City Coroner held on inquiry yesterday morning, at the Benevolent Asylum, Pitt Street South, touching the death of Mr. J. R. Channon, who was found lying dead in the Domain, on the previous afternoon, with a pistol shot through his head...

Aldine History of New South Wales
JOHN CHANNON, merchant, is the second son of J. R. Channon, engineer, and at one time a member of the Royal Navy. Our subject was born in 1850 in Cornwall, and after having received the groundwork of his education accompanied his parents to Victoria in 1859. The family removed to New South Wales, and settled in the Bathurst district where Mr. Channon, senr., became engaged in mining operations, in which occupation he was assisted by his son. In 1871 Mr. John Channon settled in Adelong, and went into quartz mining, after which he in 1875 joined Mr. Eyles in establishing their present large business. This embraces departments of grocery, boots and shoes, drapery, ironmongery, glass and chinaware, crockery, and in fact every class of general merchandise. The firm are well-known throughout the district, employ about twelve hands, and command an extensive patronage. Mr. Channon is a trustee and a committeman of the School of Arts, and a supporter of temperance principles. He is a P.M. of Lodge St. Clair, S.C., 4902, and a member of the Church of England. In 1875 Mr. Channon married a daughter of Mr. J. A. Carter, of Middle Adelong, by whom he has four sons. Apart from devoting a great deal of attention to the requirements of his business , Mr. Channon is largely interested in many of the local mining industries.
