What if, big if, a child was born on a ship, either outward or inward journey to or from England and N.Z.
Where would the birth be registered. Would the ship be soveriegn territory. Would the birth be registered at country of destination.

Sorry, a lot of quetions.

Hi Big If

I was under the impression that if there was a birth, marriage or death at sea it was in a special book. I can't think of the b........d name. I found the death of my g,grandfather in it , as he died at sea.

Hi Big If !

Births at Sea are at the National Archives, but as far as I could see, you can't do it online. Go on the above and see if you can work it out

Hi

If you know what port they arrived in you could contact the local maritime museum in that area. That is how i found my reletive, quite by accident.

We were told that he was born on ship and registered in the Uk, however i have since found that he was registered here in Napier we think due to the ship been in NZ waters,

The museum not only gave me copies of his birthing record but his mothers doctor notes.

Hope this helps

Hi Smee,

All I know he was born in Dunedin, Otago, NZ. in or around 1888. And that was from 1901 census in England.

I have been unable to find any other info, apart from his marriage and death and parents names.

When all this wet spring weather stops i will go and see if he is onthe fiche at the library, as another person has already said he is not on the BDM online records. Not sure what maritime things were like if they were there during the gold rush then it ispossible some children might of been missed with registration.

Will get back to you

Hi Steve. We have a Settlers Museum here in Dunedin, with an archive & an archivist on hand to help
http://www.dunedin.govt.nz/facilities/otago-settlers-museum

:)

I haven't darkened their doors before, as I've no NZ family myself, but I can go and try my luck on your behalf. It might take a week or two to get the chance, though, as will have to persuade my husband to take my toddler off my hands when I go.

Re: Sydney Bedford 1888. New Zealand. IS THIS HIM?

Hey Steve,

Was just looking up the census record for Sid on ancestry prior to going to the archives tomorrow...and found this:
http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/tree/7549896/person/-867261449

Is this your Sidney? Lovely pics of him and his wife! If this is he, then he died in Buenos Aires. Interestingly this tree has a birth record for him in the index as well as saying he was born in Dunedin ...but then you probably had to register births in England in order to get a passport. Anyway - also says that Walter was a surveyor, which might help me in my hunt tomorrow. Will let you know how I go (I'll be so disappointed if I don't get much!).

Cheers,
Tamsin

Hi Tasmin,

Thanks again, I appreciate all your efforts.
That's either me or Newmexican, we are both searching for Sydney.:)
If theres's nothing there, then so be it. Can't get blood from a stone.
If you can't find him on your doorstep, then it doesn't look good.
Newmexican has his death cert, and most other details, but it's just ol' Sydneys origins.
Again, thank you so much for your help, and fingers crossed.:)

Sorry Maddie - I did wonder if the link would only work if you were logged into Ancestry. Guess that's one way they persuade people to join!

Steve, brick wall, I'm afraid. We checked the national bmd, and as already reported by someone else, nothing. The archivist there told me the national records from 1888 are pretty good, but we checked the local daily newspaper for Dunedin - nothing. Also checked all post office & trade directories for that decade, nothing (even in the all-NZ directory).

Checked museum archives for him or his parents - nothing. There is no comprehensive index for passenger lists though so no way to know when his parents arrived. Incidentally, if you ever look into this again, there was a Walter Bedford in Petone/Wgtn area (in school records in 1880s/90s, so not your Walter) but his dad was George, so a red herring.

Couple of possibilities:
The archivist told me births on board ship at this date would have been registered in the country in which the ship was registered. So if they came out from England, his birth would be registered there even if he was born as the ship was about to dock in Dunedin.

Also noted that if that passenger listing is him (we didn't find any other S Bedfords in our searches, but that's not to say there wouldn't be any) then he left NZ from Wellington, not Dunedin. So someone in Wellington might be able to check directories etc there for you.
