George Aitken was born in Broughton in Edinbourgh according to emigration records .Thomas just says Edinbourgh.

Scattered houses on the farmlands which originally made up Broughton eventually gave way to more general housing in the century prior to the formation of Edinburgh's New Town which adjoined the parish of Broughton. Its modern borders are defined, approximately, as being Leith Walk in the south east, Broughton Street in the south west, Broughton Road in the north west and McDonald Road in the north east. Moving clockwise from south east, Broughton is bordered by Greenside and Calton, the New Town, Canonmills, and Pilrig. That could be Kilrig .

I wonder if he could have been thinking of 28 Broughton Place which is where Jane Aitken was living, probably as a housekeeper, and a Miss Margaret Aitken was at the same address earlier on before moving round the corner into Union Street where lived James Aitken, Writer. Miss Margaret must have died in or just before 1832 as we have a notice from the paper advertising sale of her furniture at 12 Union Street. Malcolm

Just to add to the mix:

Margaret Aitken, sister of George and Thomas, who married William Murray, was born in Broughton in 1827 acccording to her daughter's QLD birth certficate. Eliza Lester Murray was born on 10 July 1860 at Coochin Coochin station, to William Murray (36), b. Dalkeith, and Margaret Aitken (33) b. Broughton.

My gt grandmother was Jane Munsden Buckpitt Covington, named after her late aunt Jane Munsden Buckpitt, nee Aitken. Her mother was Isabella Borthwick Aitken, daughter of Thomas. Munsden is clearly a mispronunciation of Lumsden that has persisted, and Borthwick may well be the same. Another sister of Isabella and Jane was Margaret Murray Aitken (named after her aunt, wife of William Murray). Murray was sometimes spelled Murry and Moray.

In all, the family of Thomas Aitken (and Margaret Storey) was:

Elizabeth (1853-1941)
Isabella Borthwick (1854-1935)
Jame Lumsden (1855-1876)
John (1858-1941)
Margaret Murray (1869-1960)

oops - missed the youngest, Charlotte (1869-1960) who was the most interesting of all. Married a (German) soap manufacturer in QLD and went to live in Germany in the 1890s. This Aussie of Scottish descent lived through two world wars in Germany and died in Frankfurt in 1960.

Saved the image from film at the library yesterday and it seems rather odd.

There is no note to say one baptism is out of place and no correction of any dates, so how can that sequence be correct in the register?

Parish of Ipswich in the County of Stanley
Born - Baptised by William Lambie Nelson
26 Dec 1854 13 Mar 1855
21 May 1853 3 Sep 1854
