"The Excellent" Portsmouth 1862


Bendigo, Victoria
James entered the British navy on the Excellent at Portsmouth on April 1862, and was transferred to the Curacoa on May 1 1863. He served six months with the land forces in the New Zealand War, and was one of the pioneers in the fighting at the Waikata and Wayna rivers. Mr. Cook wears the New Zealand medal. He secured his discharge from the navy in Sydney on October 31 1865.

James was born in Sheet,, Hans on 30 Mar 1845 (he later married and settled in Adelaide)
