Hello crankypants,

Thanks. I'll look at the image if I can find it. Oh, Victoria and alone and unassisted.

He was born in Wales and was with the family in 1851:

1851 Wales Census
HO107/2461/567/16
Corntown Farm, Ewenny, Glamorgan, Wales
John Sands, 50, Head, Farmer of 330 acres, Llandough, Glamorgan, Wales
Ellen Sands, 39, Wife, Cowbridge, Glamorgan, Wales
John Samuel Sands, 11, Son, Llandough, Glamorgan, Wales
Jane Sands, 9, Dau, Scholar at home, Llandough, Glamorgan, Wales
Llewelyn Sands, 6, Son, Scholar at home, Llandough, Glamorgan, Wales

so nothing unusual with him being away as a border or whatever.

His father John died 1880 in Gunning and his mother Ellen in 1878 in Gunning and buried in Old General Cemetery Goulburn:

ID 639 SANDS Elleanor CE146 9 August 1878, 67y
Please see if you can find any more on John.

Thanks.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

I've checked the NLA site. I can't see anything to help me with Frances GRUBB. I noticed Mrs Llewellyn SANDS is mentioned as a teacher. I noticed a disputed will and a very long court battle.

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thanks :) I didn't look for Jane. I didn't see John Samuel's death listed in 1905 or that of Frances in 1921.

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. How did I miss that 1841 birth ?

I've been trying to find death notices in the newspaper to try and determine if the dates in the old Goulburn Cemetery list are burial or death dates. I started checking others including FURNER and YOUNGMAN and now I have the correct year of death and also parents so I'll post a query on the 1841 census board.

The other Sibling William had lots of children :D

Death # 8329/1925 SANDS WILLIAM JOHN ELEANOR GOULBURN
ID 631 SANDS William CE142 23 June 1925, 88y Husband of Marcella Lynch SANDS

Arrived in Australia ? A sibling married in NSW in 1855 and another in 1859. I have no deaths in UK or Australia for James & Eleanor.

Death # 6324/1920 SANDS MARCELLA L JAMES ELEANOR GOULBURN

Hello crankypants,

Must have arrived between 1851 and 1855.

1851
St. Mary Whitechapel
Hereford Terrace
ANDERSON
James - 47 - solicitors clerk - born Dublin,Ireland
Eleanor - 41 - born Athlone,Ireland
Mary Jane - 19 - milliner - born Dublin
Sarah Anne - 15 - app. milliner - born Stepney
Ella Elizabeth - 12 - born Stepney
Marcella L. - 10 - born Stepney
Ann A. - 8 - born Stepney
Eleanor - 4 - born Whitechapel

Looks as as though all the children except Mary Jane and Margaret ended up in NSW. Well, I have nothing yet to show either of those two did arrive.

Hello crankypants,

Three of them:

Assisted immigrants arriving in Sydney & Newcastle, 1844-59
ANDERSON Mary Jane 21 and sister Carnatic 1853 2464
ANDERSON Lucy Eleanor 19 and sister Carnatic 1853 2464
ANDERSON Sarah Anne 17 Carnatic 1853 2464

Where are the other siblings? Ellen Elizabeth, Marcella Lynch, Ann Alicia & Eleanor.

That is curious. I can't find such a vessel arriving in 1853.

Dave

Hello crankypants,

The 'Convictions' site has this:

'Carnatic'
Origin: Plymouth 1852 Sep 21
Destination: Melbourne 1852 Dec 20

but it is not listed on NSW State Records site for 1852 either. ???

Hello crankypants,

Thanks. I notice it says no relations in colony. I edited the post to include the middle names of the other sisters in case they were listed with given names reversed. I'm not having any luck with the others. Ellen Elizabeth married in 1859, Marcella Lynch in 1860, and Ann Alicia possibly didn't.

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave

Marcella's parents did come out to Australia. Note 1851 U.K Census James is a Solicitors Clerk.

The Sydney Morning Herald... Thursday 7 June 1860
MARRIAGE
On the 28th May, by special license, at St. Paul's Church, Redfern, by the Rev. Robert Taylor, Mr. William, eldest son of Mr. John Sands, Cambrian Vale, near Goulburn, to Miss Marcella Lynch, fifth daughter of Mr. James Anderson, Redfern, Sydney.

The Sydney Morning Herald... Saturday 4 June 1910
SOCIAL
On Saturday, at Goulburn, Mr. and Mrs. William Sands, two colonists of very long standing, celebrated their golden wedding, and the gathering of sons and daughters, with their wives, husbands, and children, numbered about 30. Mr. Sands came from Cowbridge, Glamorganshire, South Wales, in 1853, and went to Goulburn in the same year, where he has been in business ever since, and is now probably the oldest stock and property salesman in the State. He was married to Marcella Lynch Anderson, seventh daughter of the late Mr. James Anderson, then solicitor of the Justice Department, at St. Paul's, Redfern, Sydney, on May 28, 1860.

Finding the shipping record for James, Eleanor, Marcella, etc is a problem.

1903 N.S.W Electoral Roll – Werriwa – Goulburn

SANDS Charles Tredegar, Cowper-street, cattle dealer
SANDS John William Anderson, Beppo-street, clerk
