Hi Dave F.S have a baptism, not sure if you have this already for T.B.G 9.3.1813 Deal Kent to Thos and Ann.
Was he a clerk? There is a Thos in 1841 aged 29 boarding by the look of it in Canterbury born county. No wife.
Long shot maybe?? Did he end up in Oz?? This is looking at a members private posts in Anc.
left from Ulverston to N.S.W in 1848 with Hannah.

It is possible they were not in England in 1841.

I don't have Hannah's first marriage.

... ? PLUMMER & Hannah SMEDLEY

I haven't found him in 1841 but this is interesting (I think!)

FMP has a lot of Kent images:-

St Georges, Deal, April 9 1813
bapt Thomas Barber Goldfinch, s.o. Thomas & Ann Goldfinch, carpenter

Dover St James, 13 May 1815
mar Thomas Goldfinch of Deal, a widower
Lucy Derby, spin, by lic.

St Georges, Deal, 23 Oct 1822
bapt George Lynch Derby Goldfinch, s.o. Thomas & Lucy Goldfinch, carpenter

St Mary Dover, 5 Aug 1832
bapt Sarah Lucy Goldfinch, d.o. Thomas & Lucy Goldfinch, wheelwright

2nd marriage of Thomas Barber Goldfinch (which you already have) 25 Aug 1846, details as you have them plus father Thomas Goldfinch is a carpenter and witnesses are George L D Goldfinch and Sarah Lucy Goldfinch

I think George LD and Sarah Lucy are the half siblings of Thomas Barber , Thomas's mother having died around the time of his birth and his father remarrying in 1815.

This family can be found in 1841:-

Worthings Lane Dover
Thomas Goldfinch 50 wheelwright Kent, England
Lucy Goldfinch 50 Kent, England
George Goldfinch 15 wheelwright Kent, England
Lucy Goldfinch Female 9 1832 - Foreign Parts

In 1861 Thomas & Lucy are at Last Lane Dover, he is a furniture dealer, 75, born Sandwich Kent. Lucy is a widow by 1871.

birth from FS :-
Name Thomas Goldfinch
Christening Date 06 Feb 1785
Christening Place Sandwich, Kent, England
Father's Name John
Mother's Name Martha

marriage from FS
Name John Goldfinch
Spouse's Name Martha Barber
Event Date 26 Sep 1784
Event Place Sandwich, Kent, England

So Thomas Barber Goldfinch who went to Oz in 1848 had his grandmother's maiden name as his middle name.

Glad that is sorted!

There was an Ann Goldfinch bur. 15 May 1815 at Deal St Leonards aged 19.

There is a marriage:-

at St Mary, Walmer, Kent 13 May 1809
Thomas Goldfinch parish of Deal
Ann Newing o.t.p.
witt John Goldfinch & Jane Newing (Thomas's father was a John )

children bapt at Deal:-
14 Feb 1810
Ann Newing Goldfinch d.o. James & Ann (surely a mistake??)
11 Dec 1811
Susannah Jane Goldfinch d.o. Thomas & Ann
9 April 1813
Thomas Barber Goldfinch s.o. Thomas & Ann

but this would make Ann 13 when she married ( or age at death wrong) surely 13 too young to marry?

Thanks Elaine.

That fills in more of the gaps. Thomas B and his father both married twice. I still can't find Hannah's first marriage.

This is the shipping record from the index:
'Emperor' 1848 Sydney and/or Newcastle and family Reel 2135, [4/4786] Page 184; Reel 2458, [4/4905]
GOLDFINCH Thomas B 35
GOLDFINCH Hannah 38
GOLDFINCH Thomas 13
GOLDFINCH Anne 11
GOLDFINCH George 7
GOLDFINCH Elizabeth 5

And this is from the film of the record of the inspection of the passengers upon arrival:

Arrived 4 Nov 1848
Thomas B 35 Pork Butcher Deal Kent Thomas & Anne Mother dead Father living in Dover Ch of England Both Has a relative in the Colony but does not know where Good None
Hannah 38 House Servant and Dairywoman Peak Derbyshire Aaron & Elizabeth Smedley Both dead Ch of England Both None Good None
Thomas 13 Calais France on board
Anne 11 Calais France on board
George 7 Calais France on board
Elizabeth 5 Calais France on board

PLUMMER George (stepson) 14 Labourer Nottingham Notts. John & Hannah Plummer Father dead Mother on board
PLUMMER Henry (stepson) 8 Bassville France do do

John PLUMMER & Hannah SMEDLEY marriage?

Second marriage at Dover 25 Aug 1846 so both couples in France in 1841?

Nottingham St Mary:-

25 Dec 1833
mar. John Plummer & Hannah Smedley

21 May 1834
bapt George Plummer, s.o. John & Hannah Plummer of Albion St Nottingham

Holy Trinity, Kirk Ireton, Derbyshire :-

30 June 1810
Hannah Smedley, d.o. Aaron & Elizabeth Smedley of Ireton Wood

12 Oct 1809
mar. Aaron Smedley & Elizabeth Peach
witt Edward Peach & John Ford

just these bare details. Kirk Ireton is a small village in the Derbyshire Peak district, about 20 miles from Nottingham. Guessing the Calais connection is to do with Nottingham lace making ?

Thanks very much Elaine.

That is interesting. I can't see anything yet that would confirm it. Thomas B was a pork butcher.

I am a descendant of Richard and Eugenie Goldfinch. They were lacemakers and went to Calias then on going back to England migrated to Adelaide, South Australia.
Google is handy sometimes.

I'm logging off for a minute to test something.

Trying to find what John Plummer did in Nottingham in 1830's but no luck. There are several searchable directories on a Leicester University site but couldn't find him.

Also I was surprised when I saw pork butcher for Thomas Goldfinch 1848. Recently I looked at German pork butchers for a friend and wrote :-

.......... almost without exception they came from the Württemberg area of Germany. In the early 19th century.................There was no tradition of pork butchers in England and the German pork butchers found a ready market for their produce .[/I]

Thomas must have been one of the earliest non-german pork butchers, unless there was a different meaning in the south of England. The German pork butchers were a phenomena in the north & also London.

will keep looking!

Can't dispute the image of "pork butcher". The German pork butcher's specialised in sausages, pies, rissoles and other readymade foods and were in the North of England. There must have been "ordinary" pork butchers selling chops and meat elsewhere despite what I read about been no tradition of pork buthchers.
You learn something every day !.

Thanks Rupert.

If I didn't like making lace I would have become a stone mason not a pork butcher.

Dave
I am descended from Thomas Barber Goldfinch. He went to live in Calais, France with his wife Anne Mary Farley (or Mary Ann Fearly - known by both) after their marriage in 1834. They had at least 8 children born in Calais. Anne died in 1846 and he married Hannah Plummer (a widow), born Smedley in 1846. . They had 3 children together - 1 enroute to Australia died with two more born in Sydney, Australia. While in Calais he was a lacemaker. Yes, he was a butcher and actually carried out his trade in Australia on several occasions. He also owned hotels in Sydney. I am interested in finding more evidence on the Smedley line. There was a book published by Gillian Kelly called 'The Lacemakers of Calais' which mentions Thomas and Hannah and family. They were one family of several from Calais who chartered 3 ships to come to Australia from England.
