Thomas Betts

Valued Member
Ok guys you solved my last Australia mystery, here's a more difficult one. Thomas Betts married Catherine O'Brien 19 Dec 1864/5 at Binalong. The record shows him as either Thomas C. or Thomas Campbell, he uses both names on his children's birth. The problem we have is when he arrived in the colony and when and where he was born.
He puts his age as 24 when his son Michael was born in 1865, when he dies in 1886 he was 54 and when he married he was 33 but another record says he was 26.
Catherine O'Brien was under 21 at marriage, her death cert. says she was born in Cork and was 15 when she married. No parents are listed any where for either Thomas or Catherine.
Some say he was a convict who arrived in 1832 on the ship Planter.

Betts, Thomas, Age 18, Birth year 1814, Colony NSW, Sentence term 7, Ship Planter (1).
Height (in inches) 61, Religion protestant, Tried at warwick, Birthplace birmingham, Offence details cart robbery. His age does'nt match with this.

Others say he was born 1831 Withersdale, Suffolk. Parents John Betts, Elizabeth. The dates match this one better but still no proof it is him, it could be someone completely different. Thank you. :D:unsure:
