You probably seen this already

"Thomas Frederick Merry (1829-1911) , Draper, emigrated to TASMANIA, from BRISTOL, ENGLAND in 1852. He was the first storekeeper at Franklin on the River Huon. His 'Franklin Exchange' served the community for 9 years. He moved to QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA in 1863 and established the first of a number of businesses in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane, later setting up in Stanthorpe, Roma, Dalby, Gympie and Toowoomba. He retired to Brisbane until his death at the age of 82."

MERRY - PAIN.-On Saturday, 17th April, at No. 26 Davey Street, by the Rev. S. Ironside, Thomas Frederick Merry, Esq. Merchant, Queensland, to Elizabeth Ellen, youngest daughter of the late Mr. John Pain, Oatlands.


He had moved to Queensland with family and his first wife died in Brisbane. He went back to Tasmania to remarry.

I just checked. The paper has the initial as J. not F.

They reprinted it.
