Thomas Hardy 1750. Larbert, Stirlingshire.

I watched an old Law and Legal Tv programme, whch I recorded, called Garrows Law. A case involving a Joseph Hamer(real name, Thomas Hardy).

The actual cases are based on real events, that occured in London.

Thomas Hardy was charged with Treason in 1794. and was aquiitted.

He apparently married the daughter of a man called Priest. The name of the daughter is unknown. This woman was apparently from Chesham, Buckinghamshire.

They had 6 Children, who all died in infancy. He was a shoemaker, who set up shop in Picadilly. The last chiild dies in 1794.

Thomas Hardy was buried in 1832, at Bunfields in Islington, London.

Can anyone find the marriage of Thomas Hardy, to a Ms. Priest. I would guess it was 6 to 10 years, before death of last child. Therefore c1784 ish.

Just need the brides Christian name, if possible, or any possible baptisms of children, which may reveal her christian name.

I can find Lydia's burial in St Martin in the Fields in 1794 but I can't see any baptisms for any children parents Thomas and Lydia.

It would seem to be the right marriage, and a more than likely birth year of 1755 @ Chesham.

The Priest's are in and out of my Ives family records.

The village of Prestood(near Great Missenden), was derived from Priest Wood. Maybe concidental, but there it is.

There may be a crossover to my Daughters 4xGrandfather, Joshua Thomas Bedford.......only in as much, for politcal/social reform.
From what I recall, to be able to vote in elections, you needed to be a Land owner.
J.T.Bedford,(and his partners), would buy land, and sell it off in portions to the 'lower class'. Therefore, enabling them to vote. He, or the Company, would also loan these potential landowners the money to purchase the land, by a mortgage,..... 'at low and stable interest rate'.
Some years later, this practise was deemed a conflict of interest, between seller and mortgager, and was banned. The upshot was, this business was divided in two....one being the British Land Company, and the other eventually becoming the Abbey National Building Society.

He and his sons, subsequently, were part instrumental in saving Epping Forest from devlopement, also Upton Park,(as it was), in the East End of London.

I would like to think, that there is some link to what Thomas Hardy was trying to change in the political set up, for the common people, and the part of J.T.Bedford's enterprises of social reform. It seemed to be happening around the same time in history.

I ramble on as usual.

I'll check for the baptisms with BucksFHS, and see what's what for Lydia Priest, and parents.

Can't find anything re Nathaniel's birth or marriage but have found the following baptisms
Nathaniel 1741
Mary 1743
Sylvestra 1746
Anne 1748 (gives Nathaniel's occ as Carpenter)
Nathaniel 1751.
All born Chesham and no burials found although I presume that the first Nathaniel must have died. There is a rather suspicious burial for a Nathaniel in 1741 but it gives parents as William and Mary. A possible mistake?

I did spot a Francis Priest marrying a Silvester Archer 29 April 1694 (Bucks Marriage Transcripts has Francis as the Groom). These may have been Nathaniel's parents as he names one child Sylvestra.

Francis was buried Chesham 1741 occ given as Carpenter and Sylvia wife of Francis was buried 1729

The Francis and Rose who had a daughter Lydia in 1739 were married 1730 Rose was a Rose Horwood and they had the following children
Mary 1734
Rose 1737 - 1737
Lydia 1739 - 1739
Rose, Francis and Elizabeth all bapt 9/6/1745

I'm sure that Francis and Nathaniel were brothers and sons of Francis and Silvester/Sylvia - just can't prove it yet.
