Hello.

I was wondering if anyone could shed any light on my 2nd great grandfather a Thomas Henry Hulme. Born around 1875 in hollinwood oldham. He had a son Harold Hulme my great grandfather.

I believe but I cant evidence this that Thomas father was a Edmund Hulme Ashton or Edmund Hulme. There is some confusion surrounding this name so I've hit a brick wall with this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards
Christopher Godfrey

Fantastic. Thank you so much. My next question is where did the hulme name come from if Edward's h father was a Samual Ashton. This is probably where I've not been able to pick it up.

Beginning to get a little complicated

Baptism
Edward Hulme 28 January 1849 Hollinwood St Margaret, mother Ellen Hulme

Banns were read for Samuel Ashton/Ellen Hulme at Oldham Parish Church 17th, 24th, 31st October 1847 but it would appear that the marriage did not take place for whatever reason. They were read again 28th April, 5th and 12th May 1850 and this time they did marry.

GRO Ref

Jun 1850 Oldham 20 849

Why Edmund dropped the name Ashton will probably never be revealed - perhaps he had a falling out with his father.

I originally looked into this awhile back and I was told that he had potentially dropped the name Ashton. I would love to know why. Maybe a family dispute perhaps over something.

So is Martha Swindles a step mother to Edmund do you think and Ellen Hulme his birth mother?. Perhaps this is where the story lies with regards to the name being dropped perhaps.

HULME, EDMUND -
GRO Reference: 1848 J Quarter in OLDHAM Volume 20 Page 763

Born before the marriage so no mother's name there - but it is Hulme

This reminds me of my Lewton/Lear/Hodges families.

Edmund was born a Hulme but became Ashton when Samuel Ashton married Ellen Hulme

Not uncommon in cases like that to revert to birth name Hulme and then sometimes in later years return to mother's married name Ashton.
