This is my grandfather, b.1875, give or take five years, in Dewsbury Yorks.
I'd like to know who his father was - I believe it would be one of the following; Charles Jones b. Carmarthen, Wales 1837
Arthur " " " 1842
Edward " " " 1844
William " " " 1850
All listed above were brothers - parents Daniel, Mary.
Another brother, Sir Alfred Lewis Jones, must have been my Grandfather's uncle. The whole story about this is in the Introduction Forum under 'Greetings from Colorado'

Thanks, Julie - your info tells me when the familt emigrated from Wales. I'm primarily focusing on which of Alfred's four brothers was Thomas's father. There's more on Tom in my post under 'Introductions"

I've sent for some birth & marriage certificates. I've been able to determine that Thomas Hughes Jones was b.1882, Dewsbury Yorkshire. I think his parent's names were Robert & Sarah. What the connection to Sir Alfred Lewis Jones may be is yet a mystery.

Julie - I see you're in London. Have you ever heard of a 'Gledhill Hotel' there? It would have existed around 1890 or so, that's when my g.father purportedly played in it's basement as a boy(my mother said his father owned the hotel).
I can find census references of Sarah (Sarah Helen Kershaw?) being married to a James Gledhill (would explain the hotel story), but no mention of an earlier marriage to Robt. Jones. Hopefully the marriage & birth certs. will clear some things up. I hope to recieve them in a week or so. Thank you again for your research on my behalf!
I do have a ref.# for a Robert Jones marriage - march Qt, salford, 8d, 18
at salford ascension C29/2/191

Hi Fuddy, Nothing on the Gledhill Hotel.

1901 James Rea Gledhill is at 292-292 Lower Boughton Road, civil parish Broughton, Lancashire. ----- Hotel occ could be landlord/victualler, pub Sarah and Thomas is with him. On the 1891 censu Manchester, he is working as a barman to his brother in law Samuel Hott at the Castle and Falcon, Sarah is down as sister. So it looks like the hotel was after 1901?

Would you like the census details for 1891 and 1901?

Julie

Wow - that's a big help. I don't think I need further details on those census's. I'm thinking perhaps this grand "Hotel" story is actually a smaller hotel/pub, maybe even the Castle&Fountain?? I know someone in Liverpool who can check on that. Thanks again!
