Not much luck in 1851, Dave...

Thomas may have got married there are a couple of possibilities, the same for getting into to trouble and being 'transported'. There are too many Thomas Martins' he doesn't look to be with his parents, unless there is a transcription error somewhere...

I can find his parents in 1861, but Thomas is not with them... Charles gives his birth as Higham, Suffolk, living in Gazeley.

Charles Martin 60
Mary Martin 60
Susan Martin 29 [dau]
William Martin 10 [son]
John Martin 50 [Brother]
RG 9; Piece: 1034; Folio: 55; Page: 13
[All born Higham, Suffolk]

Thanks Geoff. :)

I said 1841 and 1851 because of this marriage in NSW:

V1856150 86/1856 MARTIN THOMAS - STUART EMMA - IA= Wesleyan Methodist Sydney

I don't have his arrival.

A rather common name but not as common as William MARTIN.

I can't prove this is the right one:

Death 13488/1890 MARTIN THOMAS - UNKNOWN UNKNOWN - WATERLOO

Will have to search 1841 - 1856 in shipping records then.

I found only one tree and it lists Thomas as the only child so siblings are no help.

The tree has the death as 1891 Sydney but the death in that year does not fit at all.

I don't know where the tree author got Suffolk. Perhaps the marriage. Didn't have time in my 90 minutes to look the marriage up on film at the library today.

The Thomas and parents found appear to gel, so if he is an only child, there is a problem...

Interesting that none of the family can be found so far in 1851

The tree has no death for Charles or Mary.

Don't know if he was an only child or not. Many trees only have the child of interest.

No clues that I can see with the names of the children born in NSW:

Henry C d. 1879 Henry C ** probably Charles
Rachel Sabina
Arthur P d. 1920 Arthur P
Cordelia A (Annie) ** connection to my tree
William T (Thomas)
Frederick J S (John Stuart) ** STUART mother's maiden name

Only Cordelia.

The Sydney Morning Herald - Saturday 9 April 1887 p.1
Marriages
McCALLUM - MARTIN.-March 30, 1887, at the residence of the bride's parents, by the Rev. C. Olden, Rev. W. McCallum, only son of the late George McCallum, of Ayr, Scotland, to Cordelia Annie, second daughter of Thomas Martin, Lyndhurst, Glebe.

Don't know if the name of the residence is from MARTIN or McCALLUM side

The Sydney Morning Herald - Thursday 30 July 1931 p.8
DEATHS
McCALLUM.-July 29, 1931, at her residence Scotia, White-st., Strathfield, Annie, beloved wife of Rev. W. McCallum, aged 68 years. (Suddenly).

Sometimes that's a clue to a place in a county in UK.

Transportation to NSW effectively ceased in 1842 but between 1846-50 exiles were transported. Exiles had served part of their sentence in a penitentiary in Britain and were granted a conditional pardon or ticket of leave on arrival in the Colony.
