The seaman's service record on Anc. says he joined for 12yrs in 1908 then lists the ships he served on till the list stops with H.M.S Drake when it says "ran 2/5/12 "Drake" Sydney".

If you then look on Trove for H.M.S Drake between 1.5.1912 and 31.12.1912 you will see that a total of "only" nine men deserted during her stay in Sydney. A newspaper of 7 May 1912 says a warrant has been issued for the arrest of two chief stokers who are missing from H.M.S. Drake, so presumably he was one.

No names are given for the deserters but there are several articles about one who was caught and who claimed to be the Clapham murderer but later retracted it.

Hope this helps
Elaine

Trove gives another article, published 1 Jan 1913 saying a man from Drake deserted as he was offered a place on a farm. When he got there they told him to return to the ship & leave honestly. He returned, served 10 days cells and then resumed his job on board and came back to England.

Don't know whether that is of interest, no name given.
