Hello cp,

Thanks. I'll go back to TROVE. ;)

Several gaps in the above.

Have not been able to confirm the marriage in Patrixbourne, Kent.

Don't know when they arrived in Australia. I don't know of any children born after 1836 so all I can say is that Thomas b. 1799, Sarah and son Thomas (b. 1 Mar 1836 Charing, Kent) arrived between Dec Q 1844 and Mar 1850.

I've had no luck finding Sarah's birth or her mother's name.

Yes, I was leaving the 3rd marriage for one more day to spare you. >:D

EDIT: You have found the puzzle. :2fun:

Marriage #1867/C0139 Golding Mary Grant Slaughter Thomas

Is it Maria GRANT or Maria Grant GOLDING? Is it her 2nd marriage? What is her maiden name? What is her dob?

1851
Civil Parish: Hastings St Mary Magdalen
County: Sussex
GRANT Maria servant 1822 age 29 Hastings, Sussex

1861
Civil Parish: Great Yarmouth St Nicholas
County: Norfolk
GRANT Maria Companion 1822 age 39 Hastings, Sussex

Arrived as GRANT or GOLDING and when ?

Regards,

Dave

Hello cp,

This explains the BALE connection.

Thomas is the only one of the children said to have arrived with his father Thomas and Sarah. Other siblings of Thomas, sen and jun, did arrive but we'll get to them later.

Thomas SLAUGHTER b. 1 Mar 1836 Charing, Kent d. 2 Dec 1905 Brisbane

The Moreton Bay Courier - 16 Apr 1861
SLAUGHTER-BALE.-On the 6th April, at Albert Cottage, Ebenezer Place Brisbane, by the Rev. B. G. Wilson, B.M., Mr. Thomas Slaughter, of North Brisbane, to Miss Matilda Bale, third daughter of Mr. John Bale, builder, of Fortitude Valley.

Matilda BALE b. Sep Q 1841 Kensington d. 29 Jun 1911 Qld.

Please see what you can find. Thanks.

Hello cp,

Thanks for checking. Other members of the family have been found but not those three.

I've had no success with Maria or Sarah SMITH. I can't find a marriage for a William Head SMITH.
I keep finding Francis William Head.

Dave

Hi Dave

That's interesting, I was searching for a William HEAD not SMITH. Is it possible the marriage to Thomas is Sarah's 2nd marriage.

(Not this one) father is John HEAD.
Marriages Dec 1842
HEAD Sarah Kensington 3 237
SMITH Robert Kensington 3 237

Hello cp,

Well now. :D Thanks.

If Thomas can marry 3 times then Sarah can marry twice. ;)

Sarah was born abt. 1798 so marriage could be in 1820s.

John SMITH & Sarah HEAD
25 Apr 1824 Saint John The Baptist, Croydon, Surrey

I wonder how many Sarah SMITHs are in the 1841 census?

FS says 11, 797 of them.

The proof will be the death of John SMITH between 1824 and 1844. :2fun:

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave

The Brisbane Courier (Qld. : 1864-1933) Tuesday 15 March 1898 p 4 Article
DEATH OF AN OLD RESIDENT.
The familiar form of Mr. Samuel Jeffcoat will be missed from the ranks of Ipswichians. His death occurred at 5 p.m.on Sunday at the residence of his son, Mr.Thomas Jeffcoat, Darling-street. Mr. Jeffcoat was born in Leicestershire, England,in May, 1820, his father being a soldier who fought all through the famous Peninsular wars. At an early age Mr. Jeffcoat was apprenticed at Woolwich to learn the sawing trade, and after faithfully serving his Indentures he was appointed to take charge of the saw-milling department in connection with the Woolwich Arsenal, which position he kept until the outbreakof the Crimean War, when he with Mrs, Jeffcoat and a family of four children two sons and two daughters emigrated to Moreton Bay, taking passages in the sailing vessel New Great Britain, and arriving in Brisbane in January, 1857. After three years residence in the metropolis he accepted an engagement from the late Mr. Joseph Fleming to take the oversight of the saw-milling department In connection with the Bremer Mills-indeed, on two occasions, Mr. Jeffcoat had the oversight of Mr. Fleming's saw-mills. Returning to Brisbane, he went into the contracting business, and the buildings at Dunwich, thePilot Station houses, and other early structures on the islands in Moreton Bay wereerected by Mr. Jeffcoat and his partners. While In Brisbane Mrs. Jeffcoat died. During the sixties, Mr. Jeffcoat came to Ipswich, and was manager of Mr. Leslie's saw-mills at North Ipswich, then on the sitewhere Messrs. Hancock Bros. saw-mills now stand. After several years spent in Mr. Leslie's employ he started as a contractor on his own account in Ipswich, where he had resided ever since. For the last eleven years he had lived with his son, Mr. Thomas Jeffcoat, and had suffered a good deal from Ill-health for the past several months, due to a general breaking up of the system. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, and was largely, attended.

Death of 1st wife in 1859.

Hi Dave

Nothing for Emma DE FRAINE (+var) in the QLD E/R's. She would be in her early 80's to be on the 1903 e/r.
Do you have her death, can't see it, did she remarry, did she travel on her own to Australia.

cheers

Hello cp,

:2fun: Exactly.

Seems she travelled on her own so when did William arrive?

No sign of a remarriage or a death. ???

Some researchers have put her death 1862 - 1868 that is assuming she had died by the time of William's marriage.

Emma's father was Samuel THOMPSON. I don't know her mother's name.

I was thinking of William to 1914 in the E/R. :)

Dave
