Reel 2494
Robert 18 Ag labourer Norfolk Wesl. Yes Uncle William in Sydney
Register No of Application 10691 £5 Agent W. Castleton ?

Very unusual that the reel does NOT list his parents.

and Robert's death:

1327/1943 THURSTON ROBERT THOMAS - - ANNIE - BURWOOD

and Robert in census with aunt Sarah:

1871
RG10 Piece 1828 Folio 37 Page 10

County: Norfolk
Address: Marsh Lane
Thomas Rumsby 45 Ag Lab Eaton Norfolk
Sarah Rumsby 39 Postwick Norfolk

Robert Thomas Thurston lodger 5 Yarmouth Norfolk

Name Relation Marital Status Gender Age Occupation Birthplace Disability
Thomas RUMSBY Head M M 51 Ag Lab Eaton Norfolk
Sarah RUMSBY Wife M F 49 Postwick Norfolk

HO107/1818/88/1
Civil Parish: Intwood
County: Suffolk
Registration District: Henstead
ED: 7
Address:
Ann Thurston 22 servant Postwick
Thomas Numsby 28 Groom Eaton
The original does look like Rumsby

It would seem as though Sarah is Ann in this census.

Marriages Mar Qtr 1852
Rumsby Thomas Blofield 4b 361
Thurston Sarah Blofield 4b 361

1861
RG9 Piece 1226 Folio 23 Page 40
Plumstead Road, Thorpe
Rumsby Thomas Head 35 Ag Lab Eaton
Rumsby Sarah Wife 29 Postwick
Rumsby Elizabeth Dau 9 Postwick
Rumsby Henry Son 6 Intwood

===================================

So James, Charles or Henry is Robert's father ???

Hmmm....

Just been rechecking the censuses, in post #2 1861 Agnes A is a g dau., I checked out the trees, there is one and it suggests a Mary Ann b. 1838 is her mother and her parents James and Sarah..

Looks like Agnes' marriage, says father is John...

Agnes Amy Thurston
Age: 19
Spouse: Albert Hill
Spouse Age: 20
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 13 Jan 1875
Parish: Bethnal Green St Thomas
Borough: Tower Hamlets
Father: John Thurston
Spouse's Father: John Brown Hill
Register Type: Parish Register
[Image clearly says Agnes Ann, John H's Occ: Gardener. Wit: William ? and Emma Hall]

So Agnes' father is likely to be John b. 1847 and her mother is unlikely to be John's sister as suggested by the tree.

Geoff

Edit: Oh! the tree says the g g g/son sent for the birth cert.

Going back to Robert, interesting he was b. Yarmouth..

England & Wales Marriages, 1538-1940
Annie Thurston
Birth Date: abt 1842
Age: 26
Father: James Thurston
Spouse: Martin Veasey
Spouse's Age: 32
Spouse's Father: Joseph Veasey
Marriage Date: 10 Apr 1868
Marriage Place: Yarmouth, Norfolk, England

The marriage checks out on FreeBMD Yarmouth 4b, 5.

So Ann/Annie could be Robert's mother, he would be reg. as a Thurston because Annie didn't marry until 1868.

1871
Town: Melton Mowbray
County: Leicestershire
RD: Melton Mowbray
Sub-RD: Melton Mowbray
ED: 3
RG10; Piece: 3294; Folio: 46; Page: 9

Marton Veasey 39 [b. Melton Leicestershire, Ag Lab]
Annie Veasey 36 [b. Postwick]
Emily Veasey 3 [b. Yarmouth]
Annie Veasey 2 [ do ]
George Veasey 1 [ do ]

Note: Checking the offspring births, Emily's birth was reg as Thurston not Veasey.

If assumptions are correct, I suspect Robert probably became too accustomed to living with Sarah/family, he stayed with them. Probably accounts for him not not knowing his father.

Thanks Geoff. :)

I think I have it.

So Robert's mother is the Ann 11 months old in 1841 and her brother William aged 10 in 1851 is the one who was already in Australia - hence uncle. And hence no father listed on Robert's death reg.

Yes. Have to follow all the leads you are given. I didn't really ask enough about why Yarmouth.

I have a heap of stuff from the library this morning. I will get round over the next few days to viewing all the images I saved of early NSW BMD records. There will be some queries.
