To open 1939 register

I contacted Findmypast to see how i go about opening my late father's 1939 register.

Part of their reply--

We provide a free Evidence of Death checking service for all Findmypast subscribers - 12 month world subscription via an online form. Subscribers must be signed in and have unlocked a household which contains an officially closed record, before completing a form to request an officially closed record to be opened.

Otherwise, you can submit an FOI (Freedom of Information) request to search closed records within the 1939 Register via The National Archives website here;

The National Archives will guide you through their process and if your request is successful, we will receive notification and instruction directly from TNA to open the record. This can take up to 20 working days, as per TNA guidelines.

When i clicked on the link to the National Archives to see what i have to do there is also a fee involved so whether i either have to be a paid subscriber to FMP which costs or pay National Archives.

The National Archives also states "require the address as of 29 September 1939" I have no idea where my father was on that date which is one reason i wanted the register opened.

Maybe i was expecting to much, i thought i would send them proof of death and they would open it Not so unless you pay.

Thanks gibbo for info I didn't have.

I've probably got some 1939 records that if open would help me.

NSW BDM just increased the fees a few days ago. Very expensive now.

It wasnt overly important, more for curiosity sake than anything else
