A townsman is a resident of a town I think. I am not sure if it was an actual occupation?

I think it could me a "Commercial Traveller" actually as well. I just googled old occupations.

Where did you find this reference in your family?

A townsman is a castle dweller, someone who is living in a stately home or castle, servants who were in higher service to the aristocracy, ie footmen, butlers etc, and lived on the premises used to be classed as townsmen. Hope this helps.

Hello. I was looking at the 1881 census for Liverpool at family member's. & was looking at the neighbours. it was some one's occupation. thank you.

Stericos explanation is correct. A few of my ancestors were butlers and footmen so similar to townsmen.
