Hi.

Am new to the site and was wondering if anybody could help me.

I am trying to find about my surname Newell and to trace it back. Unfortunately it has come to a halt with my grt-granfather John Basil Newell. He was born in 1892 ( according to his marraige certificate which i have bought from 1916 ) to my grt grand mother Bessie Isabel Stone ( also 1892 ) from Liverpool.

They moved to Canada in 1919 and she returned with 2 kids in 1921. Her passport says Brockville, Ontario and my grand dads army records say birth as Perth, Ontario, which arent a million miles apart.

Why Canada?, Why Brockville or Perth? and where was my grt grandad from? are all unknowns. I am not sure if he was canadian or english. His father was called John Henry Newell who was deceased in 1916, but again i can find nothing else about him.

Other family lines i have flukely traced back to the 1700's, but i am knackered with the one that matters.

Any help greatly appreciated or tips on where to go looking that i may have not already looked.

Cheers
Kev

Hi Julie.

Thanks very much for helping.

Bessies father was a Richard Augustus Stone, who was born in Reading in May 1866 and married a Mary Jane Brumby. His father was also called Richard and born in 1844. Most of this coming off links with other peoples family trees

I found an old diary of my nans which had a few dates written in. It mentioned Bessie leaving on July 11th 1913, as well as sailing on a ship called "My Elegance"?? ( poor hand writing ) on July 21st 1915 back to England, and another sailing to England in April 1921 on the Empress of France accompanied by my grandad John Basil aged 2 and his sister Mary Isabel aged 4.

The wedding certificate mentions John Henry Newell's occupation as HM Armed Services. Havent really searched any military records yet as i dont even know his DOB or nationality, just know he was deceased by 1916, ?cause.

Thanks again
Kev

Hi.
Thanks again.

Havent had chance to do anything over last few days as i ahve been working. Hopefully when the kids are asleep later i can have a good search.

Not too sure on the last post. Everything seems right bar the dob.

my grt grandad ( john basil ) was born approx 1892 according to wedding certificate so i am assuming John Henry was born late 1860's or early 1870's.
This leaves a bit of an age gap between brothers. But considering i have nothing else as yet i will try and look through some censuses, etc later to see.

John Basil, also apparently HM Forces in 1916, just seems an enigma at present. I did find some info mentioning a death in 1933 in Lambton, Ontario of a John Newell, who's father was also a John. But havent been able to seek further into it. Also found some mention of a wedding he may have been a witness at for a man called Milton More, in June 1924, mentioning he was from Perth.

I did also find a few attestation records of John Newells. A few possibilites appeared but cant really be narrowed down at present. They were births around 1864 - 1875, all with Irish fathers and living in Ontario.

Cheers for helping
Kev

Hi Julie.

Just looked at the wedding certificate and its sys John Henry was a foreman, engineer. It was Richard Stone who was in the army.

Also, just noticed some writing on my grandads army forms that maybe John Basil lived at 98 Grt Moira Street, Ontario in 1937 so the Lambton death isnt him.

Cant wait for 2031 and 2041 when i can see the census, might get somehwere then!!!!!!!

It seems the Perth area is where he has lived. Am going to have to search this area to see about John Henry Newell as well.

Did just find one born 1893 with a dad John Henry, but it says from Nebraska in US with a wife Lucy Beane??

Nothing seems to come up in Canada for some reason that fits

Hi.

Is there anybody that can help me.

Everything I am looking at hits a dead end.

I am trying to find anything about my grt grandad John Basil Newell, aged 23 yrs in 1916 when he got married, and a private soldier in HM Forces.

Fathers name John henry Newell, deceased by 1916.

There are links with Canada and UK.

All searches of military records, census records, birth records etc come to nothing

Hi.

A kind lady emailed me yesterday from canada with a shipping document from the grampian saikling into quebec in 1919-1920.

It has a JB Newell with 2 dependants in the 21st unit?? the numbers are blurred but look like 99744,59744 or 89744.

His address again is blurred but looks like 3 letters EMD,BMD, BND???? in Perth, Ontario.

It says he is a A/sgt?? is this acting, apprentice or something?

Cant understand why nothing comes up on canadian searches for me. Am suspecting somehow this is going to be where the scandal is found in the family!!

Further checked those codes on a canadian archive site. It says he was born in london on 24/4/1889. NOK Michael Mckian at Armstrong Cors?? in Perth Canada.

Found him on a census for 1881 in Canada. Big family, but not sure of the link. Am wondering whether he was orphaned out???

If this him, why the wrong age on his wedding, other than vanity!!!

cheers julie.

Another age to consider!!

Have now got a wedding cert and 1911 census saying he was born 1893, but cant find anything else yet to find where he was born.

have got an army attestation saying he was born 28 april 1889 in London, with the nok McKean who he lives with on 1911 census but with a different age.

And possibly the sailing john bh newell born around 1895, again very possible!!

Wish I hadnt told my dad I was going to do this now. Thought it was going to be a doddle.

Still cant pin him down to a birth country yet! God knows how many john newells were born around this time with a father john.

I think the John BH Newell might be the same one coming up on the 1901 census born in Everton. Could be the one as my grt grandma was living nearby. Not too far from where that other team in town play at. Wonder if his father was John Henry?
