A huge requirement is to trace witnesses to marriages, unless they were regualr ones, such as they were serial witnesses. Often they were rellies, or friends. Even friends can help trace the origin of an ancestor if both besties came from the same parish and one travelled to watch his friend get married.
In 1780 my ancestor James Webb married Mary Newman Smith in Foulness, Essex. Witnesses were Abraham Beard (who I found was the parish clerk) and Joseph Purser. I am concentrating on Joseph Purser who may have links to the Ockendon and East Tilbury areas of Essex.
