Transferred to Royal Australian Navy

Whilst looking into a member of my wife's family i found his navy career. He signed up to the Royal Navy in 1914 for 12 years and from 1919 to 1921 he was transferred to the Royal Australian Navy serving on 2 ships.
I've not come across this before and wondered if it was common for a sailor to transfer to another nations service.

I have done gibbo but the quality isn't brilliant so hoping the one they send is better.
