I'd like a look up please for the following TRENCH family in Midlothian in 1861.

The only information I have on Robert so far is that his middle name is probably Hutchison.

Robert b. ?
Mary b. 11 Mar 1838 Borthwick
Alexander b. 22 Apr 1857 Borthwick

Thanks.

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thank you for the listing. It is a possibility however so far I can't find their deaths on SP as TRENCH or TREANCH. The other possibility is that his mother did die and that he was farmed out and that his father remarried:

Iabella RITCHIE 1 Dec 1865 Lasswade

I can't prove it yet. They moved around a bit in Midlothian and had several children. They were back in Borthwick for the birth of Thomas on 7 Oct 1867.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Re Charles SHEDDEN:

1851
Civil parish Crichton
Town Pathhead
Address E Side Pathhead
Charles Shedden age 48 occ grocer born Glendevon Perthshire
Charles Shedden son age 15 occ asst grocer born Liberton
Ann Shedden dau age 13 occ servant born Liberton
Margaret Shedden dau age 10 born Lasswade
John Shedden age 8 born Lasswade (no relationship given)
William Shedden age 6 born Liberton (no relationship given)
Euphemia Shedden age 4 (no pob or relationship given)
Euphemia Pentland sister in law age 27 born Liberton occ housekeeper
He does apparently appear in 1861 as a coal miner in Cockpen, Midlothian. I've tried to get a copy of the listing or at least more info but I'm still waiting for a reply. He was back in Midlothian in 1871:

1871
Civil parish Stobhill
County Midlothian
Charles Shaden age 70 occ grocer born Clackmannen
Please see if you can find him in 1861. Thanks.

I'm still looking for his birth about 1802 in Dollar or Glendevon.

Thanks.

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. No doubt it's the family. Maybe the sons are coal miners and Charles is still a grocer. It's one more for Dollar.

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thanks. I'm betting there was more money for the sons as coal miners and the census taker probably thought Charles Snr was also a coal miner. It's looking more likely he was born in Dollar, Clackmannen.

Dave

Hello crankypants,

1861
Civil Parish: Cockpen
County: Midlothian
Address: No 25 Gowkshill
SHEDDEN Charles head 1801 age 60 Coal Miner Dollas, Clackmannan
SHEDDEN Charles son 1837 age 24 Coal Miner Liberton, Midlothian
SHEDDEN John son 1843 age 18 Coal Miner Lasswade, Midlothian
SHEDDEN William son 1845 age 16 Coal Miner Lasswade, Midlothian
SHEDDEN Margret visitor 1841 age 20 Joiners Wife Lasswade, Midlothian
PENTLAND Euphemia servant 1822 age 39 Domestic Servant Liberton, Midlothian
WALKAR Lewis nephew 1844 age 17 Coal Miner Liberton, Midlothian
PENTLAND John nephew 1852 age 9 Scholar Newbattle, Midlothian
Euphemia PENTLAND had an illeg child Lewis WALKER born 3 mar 1844 so age 7 in 1851 (but not found in 1851) and apparently another in abt 1852 named John PENTLAND so one wonders about the status of Euphemia SHEDDEN.

IGI has "EUPHEMIA PENTLAND Birth: 26 OCT 1846 Liberton, Midlothian C116939" with no parents given, although the OPR gives: "PENTLAND : 1846 : Euphemia, illegitimate daughter of Euphemia PENTLAND was born at Echobank, on the 26th day of October eighteen hundred and forty six, and baptized on the 29th day of October 1855 by the Revd John Stewart Witnesses Margaret PENTLAND & Mary Handyside" - Liberton OPR.

The 1851 Euphemia SHEDDEN is probably Euphemia's child, not Ann's.

Charles SHEDDEN is with daughter Margaret PEAT in 1871 so I don't know what has happened to Euphemia PENTLAND born 1824 Liberton and her three children:

Lewis WALKER b. 1844 Liberton
Euphemia PENTLAND or SHEDDEN b. 1846 Liberton
John PENTLAND b. 1852 Newbattle

Please see if you can find any of them in 1871 in Midlothian.

Thanks.

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. All three children are still around. Now, I'm curious about one thing:

PENTLAND Euphemia granddaughter 1847 age 24 Domestic Servant Liberton, Edinbrshire
Her mother is Euphemia PENTLAND born 1824 Liberton a sister of Ann who's parents were John & Ann KNIGHT and not Colin & Margaret.

:D

Hello crankypants,

I'm trying to sort out a Robert and a Robert H TRENCH. It looks as though the name Robert appears in at least 3 generations.

I have found the birth of one but with no middle initial.

Please see if you can find this family in 1841.

Alexander TRENCH / TREANCH
Elisabeth b. ?
Robert b. 1829 Liberton, Midlothian

Thanks.

Hello crankypants,

Thank you. That makes 5 generations of Robert now. I'm fishing too much and will have to call a temporary halt to this one.

Regards,

Dave
