no not a trick question.

ask yourself, what is thunder, where does the sound come from.

It is caused by air rushing into the void made by lightning, but I can't get my head round how something you can't feel can make such a noise.

I disagree with your initial concept that one cannot feel air.
Have you never felt wind?
Thunder is basically the effect of air pressure as in an explosion or a sonic boom from aircraft.
