Walter Thorogood

I am looking for the birth date of my maternal Grandfather Walter Thorogood
Who was born at Stebbing Essex in about 1885 also his parents names. He died
Aged 74 approx at Little Sailing Essex. His occupation was a cattledrover.

The only Walter Thorogood born in Stebbing was born in about 1872 however there are a few people with the same name who were born approx 1883-1887. What was his wife's name?

So unless Walter had a career change from Baker to Cattledrover, I do not think this is the one either.

Found another Walter in 1891 census as Greengrocers assistant aged 19, born Stebbing. Working in Hornsey, Middlesex.

This family are still at Dunmow Road in 1901, Walter is a ag. lab, further down the census page is another Thorogood family, William Thorogood head is a stockman on farm (cattle).

I will do as you say and order marriage cert. Mum was from quite a large family she is the youngest
And together with a sister Margaret the only survivors. She lost one brother in the war. I think his name
Was fred? Another brother Tom was a Butcher in Felsted brother Vic was a caretaker / Gardner around the Dun mow are
A sister was a farm labourers wife at Yanworth Gloucester mum is Hilda now living in Thatcham.

I wonder if this fits any trees on Ancestry. Can't wait until I get on line Friday!

Hi Gwen

Its typical, a rare name in a tree and you think "great" but you find that there were a few families of people with that name in one area and they were all fathering children at around the same time and using same names, and that seems to be the only part of the country the name comes from.

The marriage cert will give fathers name and occupation and it will help you decide which one is the right Walter Thorogood.

It seems that we have a common family name - Thorogood.
Stebbing is not far from Braintree where most of my relatives came from.
You never know we might be related down the line in some way?
