The Grenfell Record & Lachlan District Advertiser - Monday 5th Jan 1931
Obituary
Mr. W. F. McCarthy.
It is with considerable regret we record the death at Blayney, of Mr. Walton Frederick McCarthy, formerly of Grenfell. The late gentleman had not been enjoying the best of health for some considerable time, and had been staying off and on with his son Allan at Blayney where, on 23rd December, he succumbed to a heart attack at the age of 73 years. A few years ago the late Mr. Mc Carthy suffered a double bereavement, his daughter Kathleen (Mrs. N. Butchart) and then his wife passing away within a few months of one another, from which great shock he did not recover. During his later years- at Grenfell Mr, McCarthy was not as active in the town's doings as in the earlier years, when his name figured largely in many efforts for the welfare of Grenfell and district, and the concert platform knew his ability on many an occasion. No one knew this district as perhaps he did, and by steady application to his business he gradually prospered. Mr. McCarthy was one of the band of Grenfell pilgrims to make the Kimberley trip at the time of the gold rush, the other members of the first contingent being: Alex. Meldrum, Bob Meldrum, D. Perry, Jim McFar land, Charlie Lee. The second contingent comprised: G. Dane, W. Filby, J. McLachlan, Joe Napier, senr., Joe Napier, junr., Andrew Dein, Jas. Kerr, E. Mitton, Tom Kirkpatrick, Tom Dodd, Jack Dodd, Jack Hamilton, M. S. Williams, William Paice. The late Mr. McCarthy was twice married, the sons of the first marriage surviving being Messrs. Alfred and Fred. McCarthy, the children of the second marriage being Mrs. Perdriau (Manly), Mrs. Irwin (Manly), 'Misses Eileen, Phyllis* and Joan Mc Carthy and Mr Allen McCarthy. Charlie was killed at the war. To those who mourn the loss of a good father we extend our deepest sympathy.

MRS. W. F. McCARTHY.
The death occurred at Manly onThursday last of Mrs. W. F. McCarthy, formerly of Grenfell, and in days gone by one of the foremost and best known citizens in the social life of the town, her interest and talents being devoted to all matters that benefited the cause of charity and the advancement of the town. The late Mrs. McCarthy was a talented pianist, and her services were eagerly sought for concerts and such like entertainments. The late Mrs. McCarthy was formerly Miss McCaig, her sister (Mrs.Horsley) and her brother (Mr.Charles McCaig) also living in Grenfell. One son, Charles, was killed at the war—a fine lad whose sacrifice was keenly felt by his mother. Another son, Walton, died at Grenfell some years ago, and just recently her married daughter—Kathleen Butchart—passed away, being deeply mourned by her mother, which no doubt aggravated the attack of bronchitis from which Mrs. McCarthy succumbed. A widower and grown-up family survive—Mrs. Perdriau (Manly), Mrs. Irwin (Manly), Misses Eileen, Phyllis and Jean McCarthy, and Messrs. Cecil and Allan McCarthy, to whom we offer our deep sympathy on the death of an old and esteemed friend.
