Hi,

I have a Grandfather who died in 1915 at Gallipoli.

Would anyone know if the War Grave Commission would have his date of birth. They have his death details recorded, but it's his dob I am after as I have no way of moving forward without it.

Thanks

Shelagh

The CWGC records sometimes show a soldiers age,,,and sometimes they don't,,i suspect then that they sometimes knew a soldiers age,,,and other times they did not. If you post his name,,,and the nature of your problem,,,maybe we can help ? :)

Hi Gortonboy/Simon,

His name is William Burgess born around 1888. The CWGC have his parents as showing as John and Ann, of Cambridge Place Salford. However, on his marriage certificate he has put his father as George.

On census forms there is a John and Ann Burgess living in Cambridge Place, with a daughter named Ada, and on William's marriage cert there is a witness named Ada Burgess - so I am assuming I have the right family.

Last night I did found this on the Parish records for Salford:

Baptism: 3 Jun 1888 St Bartholomew, Salford, Lancs.
William Burgess - [Child] of John Burgess & Ann
Born: 12 May
Abode: 1 Wright St.
Occupation: Carter
Baptised by: G.F. Holme
Register: Baptisms 1886 - 1889, Page 156, Entry 1705
Source: LDS Film 1786461

This was followed by one for Ada Burgess and the dob suggest its the same Ada.

I would be grateful if either of you could confirm this for me.

Thanks so much for that Dave, that is William. I haven't seen that before.

I had heard it said that he was killed by a sniper, but didn't know where it had come from.

Like you say, his father was probably George John or John George.

I feel sure the record I found last night in the Salford parish records is my William.

If I send for the birth cert of the parish record, will it show the mothers maiden name. It did on my Grandma's, but I dont know if that was because she was the one who had registered the birth.

Thanks again for all your help Dave

Can't thank you enough Dave.

I did see the 'Ringway' one but was unsure at that point. You have really helped get me underway now. I will sit and digest it all and list in order and then carry on from there.

I owe you one Dave - thank you again
