Hello Adam,

I ask because of this and the info it contains that is either fully or partially correct or totally wrong: http://www.hoolevillage.com/history/ww1/james_barker.html

Someone thinks James was born Sollom and that is a tiny hamlet in Parish of Tarleton.

Further on it says he worked for Messrs. Dick, Kerr and Co. and I'm wondering if a 'cotton drawer' would be working there.

Also, has the marriage been found? The names of the two children? Any details for War Widow's pension?

As gibbo asked, is the address of any use? 71 Dallas Street, Preston.

Any notice in newspaper enquiring of descendants?

Dave

Can someone rule this one out by finding the full household

Name: James Baker
Event Type: Census
Event Date: 31 Mar 1901
Age: 13
Relationship to Head of Household: Son
Birthplace: Tarleton, Lancashire
Schedule Type: Household
Registration District: Blackburn
Sub-District: Oswaldtwisle
Ecclesiastical Parish: St Pauls
Civil Parish: Oswaldtwisle
County: Lancashire

By entering Tarleton as pob this one turns up in 1911:

BAKER JAMES 1888 23 Blackburn Lancashire

What occupation is that one?

Do we have anything that gives his age? At enlistment, at marriage?

Has anyone found the marriage?

No age or NOK on the CWGC site.

Thanks for making me stop and check the information again Dave, I can go down the wrong family with so little information to work on.

1901 Census James born Hoole.
1911 Census James born Hoole lane.
Hoolvillage web site, James born in Sollom.

No Hoole lane on modern maps, A by-pass was built about 1956 it left Hoole and Sollom, one one side of the road about 3 fields apart, Hoole Church and Tarleton village on the other side.
If Hoole lane went to Sollom It still a good chance of being the same James.
I will speak to the Church Elders on that one, as I have not always lived here.

Their was a cotton mill near Longton just over a mile away from Hoole, I need more info as he may have moved to Preston when he married.

I only have his census, medal card, burial site, no army records found, or birth and marriage on the Lancashire site's.
I will put this file to one side with notes attached.

Maybe there may have been a notice about him been missing and then later a death notice in the local paper. IF there was such a notice it might give the wife's name.

So married after 1911 and marriage not found. Is that right? Wife and children's names unknown.

I keep thinking of what gibbo said:

Im wondering if this employed by Messrs. Dick, Kerr and Co or this 71 Dallas Street, Preston might be able to help.

Hi Folks
I did collect more information on James Barker, and complete a file on him, after spending many days in Preston library searching newspapers, which was also very productive for many of the other names on the memorial.
But I have a problem with the last few names, a couple a I have good leads with the census but no luck connecting to the military records.
One name I have no information on is Frederick Hodson.
Looking for a connection with Frederick to the following area's Much Hoole. Little Hoole. Hoole. Walmer Bridge. Longton. ( All cover a small area)
Problems are St Michaels Hoole records online only up to 1900.
Hoole Methodist no records online.
And I have only a few weeks before November 11th.

Just to add to the James Barker Dave, the James I sent in the last post was born and always lived in Hoole.

James Barker born in Tarleton, about 3 miles away from Hoole,
1901
Preston. Longton. ed 8. piece 3942 folio 130. page 20.
His family moved to Hoole in time for the 1901, and in the 1911 they have move to Longton. Preston. 476. Longton. ed 6. piece 25239. Longton is the other side of Hoole.

James Barker in Oswaldtwistle I could find no connection.

James Barker newspaper report with photo from Sollom. Sollom is on the edge of Hoole.
I did find a marriage St Michaels Hoole 1912 James Barker to Jane Gill. and St Michaels is the nearest Church to Sollom.
Without the B.M.D. certificates the information will never be proved to accurate, which I always state when I hand over information.
