Waterloo Veteran: My 3xg grandfather William Weston b. 1790 in Prees, Shropshire,
joined the 1St Battalion Rifle Brigade in 1809 – 1828. The Royal Hospital Chelsea: Soldiers
Service Documents, 1760-1854, tell that he was discharged aged 38 due to a ‘fractured
right fibula and worn out’ in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He had served in the Peninsula and at
Waterloo with the Duke of Wellington. I understand he would have been awarded a
Waterloo medal? I would like to find out the battles etc. he took part in the Peninsula
Wars and any other information relevant to his service in the Rifle Brigade. If there is anyone
with such expertise perhaps you could point me in the right direction where I might search?

Some of the details for my Thomas Angel could have come from HERE

I don't have subs to pay sites.

Source: ‘The waterloo medal roll’ a copy of which is in the Royal Mint collection as it was the Royal Mint who struck the medals to be awarded and therefore had to have a full list of all those entitled.

Royal Mint Museum list HERE

It seems to be a list of the medals awarded for the first campaign.

Weston, William, 164
No 50 1st Battalion 59th Regiment Foot

Weston, William, 413
No 29 3rd Battalion 14th Regiment Foot

Weston, William, 307
No 46 2nd Battalion 73rd Regiment Foot

The Rifle Brigade was the 95th so something is odd.

Hi Dave, Your exertions in trying to help me are very much appreciated and for which,
I thank you. On the papers - headed by HIS MAJESTY'S 1st BATTALION RIFLE BRIGADE -
I have of my subject William Weston, it states that he had served 18 years 311 days plus
another two years for Waterloo = 20 years 311 days total. It further states that he "served
in the Peninsular and at Waterloo where he was slightly wounded." It goes on to say that he
was being discharged in consequence of "a fracture of the right fibula and worn out..." The
discharge taking place in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It certainly looks to me that he must have been
in many engagements during his service, let alone in the Peninsula and Waterloo. Incidentally
the word 'WATERLOO' is written in very large and bold capitals under his length of service. While
I am a former Royal Navy man myself, I really would like to do this subject the honour he deserves
by recording the engagements he took part in for my family's history. Both he, and they of the
Rifle Brigade, are the bravest of the brave as far as this ex matelot is concerned. My sincere
thanks again.

Jimmy
