watermen discs

hiya,does anyone in the forum know anything about watermen/lightermen.got a relly joseph jeffries who is listed on his sons birth certif as a waterman ,have heard of them but cannot seem to find any sites that give any specific information. he lived in london poplar,now tower hamlets.his son john was born in 1824 in london poplar so am surmising that it must have been at that time and earlier, as he would im sure had to have served as an apprentice to get his papers.suex
