Has anyone come across anything weird, wacky or wonderful that their ancestors had done?

There are some funny ancestor stories floating around so please feel free to share yours

My 4 x Great grandmother was a bit of a rough diamond. Been a convict and with records available we have been able to tell that if you were her friend she would fiercely stick by you but if you annoyed her she would burn your barn down .. and the wheat in it to. :D

I come to love our Bridget while researching her.

Not quite weird or wacky but my GG grandfather is possibly a not quite so honest book maker as he appears to have been involved in "The great turf fraud" although I cannot get rid of the feeling that something's not quite right.

He seems to be a bit of a lad though as he had 2 households in the 1901 census.

I've banged on about my 2x Great Granny, Elizabeth Allen, and her 7 illegitimate children, and then goes on to eventually marry her daughter, Mary Allen's father in law.:2fun:
She also got her sister, and brother in law, to 'informally adopt' a few of them, and bring them up as their own.

One can only surmise how she came to have 7 illegitimate children, either unlucky in love, or she may have been a 'lady of the night'.

I hope she was the latter, because everyone else on this side of my tree, were messing about in dirt and mud, basically.:rolleyes::2fun:

Steve.:)

I have one ancestor who had 3 illegitimate children, she could have been "a lady of the night". This was Wootton, Berkshire. She then moved to Oxford. Queen Street, of which the west end of the street is right where the Westgate Library and Shopping Centre now stands. The library is quite good inside, it has lots of Oxon PR transcripts.
