I am wondering if anyone can tell me how to find burial records for the West Derby Cemetery. I am after Robert Edgar 1913, William Edgar 1944 he died in Southport but was interred in the West Derby Cemetery in 1944 and Mary Ellen Edgar year 1945.

I live in Western Australia so help would be gratefully received.

Hi,

Have you looked at the following websites for some help?

http://liverpool-ancestors.co.uk/cemeteryrecs.htm
http://www.liverpool.gov.uk/Images/tcm21-146176.pdf
http://uk.epodunk.com/profiles/england/west-derby/3016393.html
http://www.old-merseytimes.co.uk/Merseysidegraveyards.html
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~westderbycemetery/master_page_index.html
http://www.old-liverpool.co.uk/
http://merseygenforum.proboards.com/index.cgi

I happen to be visiting West Derby briefly in a few weeks time but without something more than a couple of names, it would take me too long to search the whole cemetery for you.

The records office will have the records but I know they've been going through some changes lately and I don't think that the records are accessible other than for looking at in person. I'll be there over a weekend, so won't be able to go in.

If you do happen to come across a section and grave number, then let me know and I'll try and have a look for you. Failing that, someone from Merseyside might offer to go and search for you.

Good luck with your search!

Valerie

As you are in Australia it is worth just pointing out that West Derby is not near Derby or even in Derbyshire but is a suburb of north part of Liverpool. However historically it refers to one of the ancient Hundreds of Lancashire and known as West Derbyshire

Its area corresponds to areas of Merseyside to the north of the river Mersey and the moodern boroughs of West Lancashire.Wigan, Warrington and Halton

Hope thats helpful

Hi Grannie :)
here's a link to the best forum for Liverpool.
The LRO is closed for refurb but searches are available through vollies at their temporary premises.
You would need a lot more info for someone to do a look up.
List your post here & they will tell you who to contact, perhaps Thornton Garden of Rest, I'm not sure.
Free to join.
Valerie, what a lovely person you are!!

Thank you everyone for your help. This accounts for why I have not heard from the Liverpool Records office. I have very little information except for death certificates and a funeral notice from Southport where William Edgar lived. Mary Ellen Edgar's maiden name was Ashcoft and she did live at Hornspit Lane before her marriage. The Edgar's lived at Bremner Street and Empress Road. West Derby. Two of the sons left England one came to Australia and I have just found One that went to New Zealand. Sidney one of the sons was put into the Royal Albert Asylum and then transferred to an Adult one possibly at Ormskirk.

I will go through all the sites put up and see what I can find as well. This is a difficult family to find I can tell you.

I will contact the council and see if I can Ref Numbers. When I Find Robert William Edgars death certificate I will post the date he was 12 or 13 when he died. I think they were living in Bremner Street then he was born in 1896.

I have just been given a grave number for the West Derby Cemetery by an officer form there. IT is for William Edgar C/E 5 grave 541 if this is of any help.

He has given me the interment numbers for this grave site and to email the records office to get the correct interment details which I have done. There is four interments at this allocation.

Hi grannie,

Ok, armed with the grave number, I'll go along and see what there is to see. If there's a headstone I'll take a photo for you and write down any details.

Although I'm leaving this week, I won't be in West Derby until the 19th Feb. I'll contact you when I'm back home again.

Hi Valerie thank you for the offer to visit the cemetery. I received a death certiificate for a Mary Ellen Edgar but it was the wrong person. I can wait I have waited this long now a few weeks won't make much difference. Its the generosity of the people that makes this all worthwhile. And we are all learning something new at the same time.

Hi grannie,

I don't mind going at all. I just hope there's an headstone for me to take a photo of and some info for you. I'd hate for you to have had your hopes built up for nothing.

I hold the deeds of a family grave in Anfield cemetery and was very disappointed to find only a flat piece of grass - not even a marker. I had to work out where the grave was from looking at surrounding numbered markers.

Even if there's no headstone, I'll take a photo of the area for you.

Valerie

Hi Valerie It happens here in Perth at our Local Cemetery. They revamp the old graves and their is nothing there when people go looking for relatives. People have protested but the excuse it gives the cemetery longer life span. Typical no forward planning on our Governments Part to organise a new cemetery.

Hi Valerie, I have received a message from the records office. All four members of the family are in the one site. Mary Ellen was the last she passed on in 1955 at Accrington. The list would be Robert William, Sidney, William Edgar Father, Mary Ellen Mother. I have yet to send for Mary Ellen Edgar's death certificate.

Hi,

I'm back from my travels. We did visit West Derby cemetery and took some photos. However, there wasn't a headstone, much as I'd expected.

I'm not sure the best way to send you the photos. How about if you send me a private message with your email address, then I could send the photos either as attachments or send you the links to them?

Valerie
