Slightly out of the range, but I have just come across the name Maximilian among the usual forenames. Maximilian Comynge bap. 1589 Bishopsteignton, Devon.
Where would this name have come from? The only instance I can see is the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II, who died in 1579. I can't imagine someone in Devon naming their son after him.
Anyone have fresh ideas?
