I want to start looking at census returns from 100+ years ago but getting confused as to best way to start off - I've gone on to vs. on-line census sites and they want me to sign-up and subscribe to all sorts of databases/indexes that I'm not sure I need at all - is there some sort of guide, I wonder for a complete novice like me? -

- much appreciated and thanks in advance -

Hi I too suggest you take advantage of a free trial. Just make sure you cancel in good time so you are not charged. My own opinion, but leave Ancestry 'till last as this is the site I would go for. The 1911 census is going to be added early this year at no extra cost.

You could also get to know the free sites, posting questions you can't find, until you have a better idea of what is available and what the sites offer as they all differ
